Syndrome of duodenal compression by the superior mesenteric artery following restorative proctocolectomy: a case report and review of literature.
Restorative proctocolectomy with anastomosis of an ileal pouch to the anal canal is a new and rare cause for triggering the syndrome of duodenal compression by the superior mesenteric artery. Restorative proctocolectomy requires assessment of the position of the duodenum in relation to aortomesenteric constriction to avoid the occurrence of duodenal compression by the superior mesenteric artery. ⋯ The authors report on a case of this syndrome in a patient with familial adenomatous polyposis and review the literature on the etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this unusual entity.

Nutritional status has been considered to be one of the possible determinants of mortality rates in cases of acute renal failure (ARF). However, most studies evaluating possible mortality indicators in ARF cases have not focused on the nutritional status, possibly because of the difficulties involved in assessing the nutritional status of critically ill patients. ⋯ The use of nutritional support for these patients has produced conflicting results regarding morbidity and mortality. This review covers the mechanisms and indicators of malnutrition in ARF cases and the types of nutritional support that may be used.

Incidence of aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis in Latin America--the LATIN study.
Aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis are rare but life-threatening disorders, often caused by drugs and other environmental exposures. Reported incidence of these diseases seems to vary between different geographic regions, and few data on their incidence are available for Latin American countries. The aim of this work is to determine the incidence of agranulocytosis and aplastic anemia in Brazil. ⋯ Aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis are rare diseases in Brazil. However, there is considerable variability in their incidences between different regions.

Identification of dietary patterns using factor analysis in an epidemiological study in São Paulo.
Diet and nutrition are environmental factors in health/disease relationships. From the epidemiological viewpoint, diet represents a complex set of highly correlated exposures. Our objective was to identify patterns of food intake in a group of individuals living in São Paulo, and to develop objective dietary measurements for epidemiological purposes. DESIGN AND LOCAL: Exploratory factor analysis of data in a case-control study in seven teaching hospitals in São Paulo. ⋯ This study identified food intake patterns through an a posteriori approach. Such analysis may be useful for nutritional intervention programs and, after computing scores for each individual according to the patterns identified, for establishing a relationship between diet and other epidemiological measurements of interest.

Defecography has been recognized as a valuable method for evaluating patients with evacuation disorders. It consists of the use of static radiography and fluoroscopy to record different situations within anorectal dynamics. Conventionally, rectal parameters are measured using radiograms. It is rare for fluoroscopy alone to be used. Computer software has been developed with the specific aim of calculating these measurements from digitized videotaped images obtained during fluoroscopy, without the need for radiographic film, thereby developing a computerized videodefecography method. The objective was thus to compare measurements obtained via computerized videodefecography with conventional measurements and to discuss the advantages of the new method. ⋯ Computerized videodefecography is equivalent to the traditional defecography examination. It has the advantage of offering reduced radiation exposure through saving on the use of radiography.
