Methods of cognitive function investigation in the Longitudinal Study on Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil).
Many uncertainties concerning risk factors and evolution of cognitive disorders remain. We describe the methods and preliminary results from the investigation of the cognitive function in the Longitudinal Study on Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). ⋯ The large cohort size, of young age, and the extensive amount of clinical and epidemiological data available will make it possible to investigate the prognostic value of biological, behavioral, environmental, occupational and psychosocial variables over the short and medium terms in relation to cognitive decline, among adults and elderly people.

Muir-Torre syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis caused by mutations in the mismatch repair genes. It is characterized by the presence of sebaceous skin tumors and internal malignancies, affecting mainly the colon, rectum and urogenital tract. Awareness of this syndrome among physicians can lead to early diagnosis of these malignancies and a better prognosis. ⋯ Molecular diagnostics is a highly useful tool, since it allows clinicians to confirm the presence of mutations causing Muir-Torre syndrome. It is complementary to the analysis of the clinical data, such as dermatological presentation, presence of visceral malignancies and family history of colorectal tumors, and it provides important knowledge to help physicians and patients choose between treatment options.

Lung preservation remains a challenging issue for lung transplantation groups. Along with the development of ex vivo lung perfusion, a new preservation method known as topical-ECMO (extracorporal membrane oxygenation) has been proposed. The present study compared topical-ECMO with cold ischemia (CI) for lung preservation in an ex vivo experimental model. ⋯ The present study showed that topical-ECMO was not superior to cold ischemia for up to eight hours of lung preservation.
