Lung preservation remains a challenging issue for lung transplantation groups. Along with the development of ex vivo lung perfusion, a new preservation method known as topical-ECMO (extracorporal membrane oxygenation) has been proposed. The present study compared topical-ECMO with cold ischemia (CI) for lung preservation in an ex vivo experimental model. ⋯ The present study showed that topical-ECMO was not superior to cold ischemia for up to eight hours of lung preservation.

The Papanicolaou (Pap) test has been shown to be effective in preventing cervical cancer. However, both the national and international literature shows that Pap testing has not reached the level of coverage desired. The objective of this study was to assess women's knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding the Pap test and to investigate whether there are any associations between these three factors and the women's sociodemographic characteristics. ⋯ Women who visit doctors periodically had the most appropriate practices regarding the Pap test, but their knowledge of the procedure was poor. This suggests that these women were not receiving adequate information about the benefits of periodic testing.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a known cause of blindness in which diagnosis and timely treatment can prevent serious harm to the child. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of ROP and its association with known risk factors. ⋯ The incidence of ROP was higher than that found in the literature. The main risk factors were related to extreme prematurity.

Cavernous hemangiomas of the adrenal gland are rare benign neoplastic tumors. The clinical presentation of adrenal hemangiomas is usually vague, and they are often discovered incidentally through imaging examination s performed for other reasons. ⋯ Most occurrences of cavernous hemangiomas of the adrenal gland are non-functional and often discovered incidentally. Although rare, these unusual benign adrenal masses should form part of the differential diagnosis of adrenal neoplasms. The proper treatment for adrenal cavernous hemangioma is surgical removal.

Lower-limb amputation compromises patients' independence and autonomy, and therefore they should be referred for rehabilitation in order to adapt to prostheses and regain autonomy. The aim here was to assess adaptation to prostheses among patients with major lower-limb amputations and its association with sociodemographic and clinical data. ⋯ It was found that patients with a low educational level became adapted to the prosthesis less frequently.
