When undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, children with acute lymphocytic leukemia may present important nutritional disorders because of the gastrointestinal toxicity of most chemotherapy agents or the effects of radiation on the organism. These patients may also present changes in their serum concentrations of trace elements such as zinc and copper. The present study aimed to follow anthropometric parameters and serum levels of zinc and copper in a group of children under treatment for acute lymphocytic leukemia. ⋯ The treatment given to children with acute lymphocytic leukemia has an important effect on their linear growth rate and nutritional status, and also on their serum copper levels.

There is evidence that ectopic pregnancies present different behavioral patterns. These distinct evolutions of ectopic pregnancies represent two different natural histories. To evaluate these evolution patterns, we compared patients undergoing medical treatment and expectant management according to their gestational age and initial beta-hCG levels. ⋯ The data suggest that ectopic pregnancies can be categorized into two groups: those with early diagnosis and shorter amenorrhea, increasing or maintained beta-hCG levels over 24 and 48-hour intervals and higher beta-hCG levels requiring medical treatment; and those with late diagnosis and longer amenorrhea, decreased beta-hCG levels over 24 and 48-hour intervals and lower beta-hCG levels requiring expectant management.

Laparoscopic adjustable silicone gastric banding (LASGB) is one of the several surgical techniques for treating patients with morbid obesity. Erosion and perforation in the gastric chamber caused by LASGB are rare complications that have already been described. There have not yet been any reports of perforation of the middle esophagus during this procedure. ⋯ The authors describe the case of a patient who presented the complication of very extensive perforation of the middle third of the esophagus following LASGB. This was successfully managed using conservative treatment.

There are no reports in the literature of massive deep venous thrombosis (DVT) associated with cisplatin, bleomycin and etoposide (BEP) cancer treatment. ⋯ The patient was a 18-year-old adolescent with a nonseminomatous germ cell tumor of the right testicle, with the presence of pulmonary, liver, and massive retroperitoneal metastases. Following radical orchiectomy, the patient started chemotherapy according to the BEP protocol (without routine prophylaxis for DVT). On day 4 of the first cycle, massive DVT was diagnosed, extending from both popliteal veins up to the thoracic segment of the inferior vena cava. Thrombolytic therapy with streptokinase was immediately started. On day 2 of thrombolytic therapy, the patient developed acute renal failure, due to extension of the thrombosis to the renal veins. Streptokinase was continued for six days and the outcome was remarkably favorable.

Description of a neural sheath tumor of the trigeminal nerve: immunohistochemical and electron microscopy study.
Malignant neural sheath tumors of the trigeminal nerve affecting the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses are extremely rare. With conventional optical microscopy, their identification is difficult, and it is necessary to confirm them by means of electron microscopy and immunohistochemical techniques. ⋯ The patient was a 41-year-old woman with a ten-month progressive history of pain followed by painful edema in the left facial region, and with symptoms of bleeding, secretion and nasal obstruction. Studies with imaging methods suggested the presence of an expansive process in the left nasal and paranasal cavities. In the biopsy, the histopathological findings from optical microscopy were suggestive of a tumor of neural origin in the trigeminal nerve. Immunohistochemical and electron microscopy studies confirmed that it was a malignant tumor of the neural sheath of the trigeminal nerve. We describe the clinical, radiological, and histological features of this tumor and review the literature.
