Osteoporosis and fragility fractures are an important public health problem. Although bone loss occurs with age universally, the incidence of bone loss fractures varies greatly between racial groups. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between calcium, protein and energy intake and the bone mineral density of the femoral neck in Brazilian black and white men. ⋯ Calcium intake was a determinant of FNBMD for black men, aged 50 years or older, but not for the white ones.

Ground reaction force in basketball cutting maneuvers with and without ankle bracing and taping.
In basketball, the most common injuries are ankle sprains. For this reason, players frequently use external ankle devices or taping as prophylactic and rehabilitation measures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate ground reaction force (GRF) responses in basketball players while performing typical cutting maneuvers with and without ankle bracing and ankle taping. ⋯ Ankle bracing and ankle taping action mechanisms are still unclear and therefore should be carefully prescribed. More studies are needed to clarify taping and bracing effects on sporting activities.

The change in slope of the .VE/.VCO2 curve with time during exercise (.VE/.VCO2 slope) has been recommended as a parameter for analyzing the ventilatory response during exercise among patients with heart failure of different etiologies. The aim of this work was to evaluate the ventilatory response among patients with chronic Chagas cardiopathy. ⋯ Our results indicate that progressive deterioration in ventilatory response among chronic Chagas cardiopathy patients during exercise is more evident when the functional capacity (peak .VO2) is reduced, than when changes are related to the Los Andes classification.

As there is little information about fertility outcomes among women following clinical treatment (methotrexate and expectant management) and surgery (salpingectomy) consequent to ectopic pregnancy, we evaluate the results from hysterosalpingography subsequent to treatment. The objective was to evaluate contralateral tubal patency using hysterosalpingography following surgery and clinical treatment of tubal pregnancy. ⋯ The findings from this study suggest similar contralateral tubal patency rates following salpingectomy, methotrexate treatment and expectant management.

Unusual occipital condyles of the skull: an osteological study with clinical implications.
The occipital condyles of the skull articulate with the superior articular facets of the atlas vertebra and form an important junction between the cranium and the vertebral column. The morphological features of occipital condyles are relevant in biomechanical, anatomical and clinical studies. ⋯ The present osteological study provides a detailed morphological description of unusual occipital condyles showing uneven and serrated surfaces and also displaying longitudinal and transverse grooves on the left and right sides respectively. The case study also discusses the clinical importance of such anomalies. Precise anatomical knowledge of the occipital condyles is important for any craniovertebral operative procedures such as resection of the occipital condyles.
