Comparative Study[Wisdom teeth-complications requiring in-patient treatment. A 1-year prospective study].
In view of the conflicting guidelines issued by national and international scientific societies, debate about the indications for prophylactic extraction of wisdom teeth is ongoing. This prospective study was therefore set up to explore the complications associated with wisdom teeth and requiring in-patient treatment. ⋯ In our clinic's catchment area, infectious complications were more frequent and more severe and required more intensive and longer treatment in hospital than complications arising from pericoronitis. However, complications of prophylactic extraction of wisdom teeth were decidedly less frequent than direct or indirect complications of extraction of symptomatic teeth. Thus, our data tend to support the concept of elective extraction of wisdom teeth with the aim of preventing serious infections.

[Do questionnaires for patients improve the diagnosis of craniomandibular dysfunction with chronic facial pain? A patients' questionnaire study from outpatient practice].
The differential diagnosis of craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) is of central importance for the therapy and diagnosis of chronic facial pain. Nevertheless, opinions on causes and treatment differ extremely and are sometimes even contradictory. The necessity of obtaining a precise and thorough patient history is indisputable. This raises the question of whether a questionnaire can offer additional information in order to improve the quality of the history, diagnosis and therapy. ⋯ The picture provided by the answers is impressive for the patient, improves compliance and makes diagnosis easier. In the same way, one can document the success of therapy and explore individual outcomes which show a resistance to therapy.

[Interdisciplinary concept for classification and treatment of vascular anomalies in the head and neck].
In patients with extended vascular anomalies in the head and neck, therapeutic decisions may pose a challenge to maxillofacial surgeons, dermatologists, and interventional radiologists. We analyzed the value of an interdisciplinary classification and treatment concept. ⋯ The interdisciplinary protocol increases diagnostic accuracy and helps to establish individual treatment plans for patients with extended vascular anomalies.

Historical Article[History of the German Society of Oromaxillofacial Surgery].
The German Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was founded by Martin Wassmund in 1951. One of the main reasons was the need for scientific representation in the council at a medical convention. The Society, originally composed of 52 members, was first called "The German Society of Maxillofacial Surgery". ⋯ The presidents, convention locations, topics, and prizewinners are listed in a table. Since the founding of the Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, close cooperation has existed with the National Association of German Oral and Maxillary-Facial Surgeons (Bundesverband der Deutschen Arzte für Mund-Kiefer-Gesichts-Chirurgie). In order to intertwine scientific and political interests, a fusion of these two organizations is planned for the year 2000.

The therapy for burn injuries has established a definable management: percentage of the body surface area burned and thickness are important for the method of treatment (ambulant, on ward, intensive burn center). Open and close wound care with different bandages, in combination with primary surgery, has increased the probability of survival. A special problem is the aesthetics and function of the head and neck area. ⋯ The possibilities of correction are multiple: conservative therapy (bandages, ointment treatment, physical therapy) or surgical intervention with free skin transplantation or difficult flaps (pedicle flap, free graft, expanded flap, and microvascular anastomosed flap). The aim of research is also to cover large defects with skin culture from small donor areas. It is necessary to establish maxillofacial and plastic surgery from the beginning of the treatment for aesthetic and functionally acceptable results.
