The importance of gender is undertheorized in chronic pain research, meaning extant research cannot sufficiently shed light on how chronic pain experience and treatment are connected to institutions and societal structures. Much literature on gender and pain is not critical in orientation, making it difficult to translate data into recommendations for improved treatment and care. Our study takes a critical approach informed by social theory to understand chronic pain among women who experience socioeconomic marginalization. ⋯ Our findings depict a deeply gendered experience of chronic pain that is inseparable from the daily struggle of managing one's life with pain with heavy responsibilities, the baggage of past trauma, and responsibility for others with few resources. We emphasize the importance of chronic pain care and health and social services that are both gender- and trauma-informed. PERSPECTIVE: This article draws on an institutional ethnography (a holistic qualitative methodology) of chronic pain and socioeconomic marginalization to demonstrate the importance of chronic pain care and health and social services that are both gender- and trauma-informed.

Humans use cannabinoid drugs to alleviate pain. As cannabis and cannabinoids are legalized in the United States for medicinal and recreational use, it has become critical to determine the potential utilities and harms of cannabinoid drugs in individuals living with chronic pain. Here, we tested the effects of repeated ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) vapor inhalation on thermal nociception and mechanical sensitivity, in adult male and female Wistar rats using a chronic inflammatory pain model (ie, treated with complete Freund's adjuvant [CFA]). ⋯ These data provide a foundation for future work that will explore the cells and circuits underlying the antihyperalgesic effects of THC vapor inhalation in individuals with chronic inflammatory pain. PERSPECTIVE: Cannabinoids are thought to have potential utility in the treatment of chronic pain, but few animal studies have tested the effects of chronic THC or cannabis in animal models of chronic pain. We tested the effects of repeated THC vapor inhalation on chronic pain-related outcomes in male and female animals.

Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) affects postoperative rehabilitation and quality of life in patients, but its mechanisms are still poorly understood. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) attenuates neuropathic pain in animal and human studies, but its efficacy for CPSP treatment and its underlying mechanism have not been elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the analgesic effect of HBO in a CPSP rat model and the role of spinal cord adenosine circulation in HBO-induced analgesia. ⋯ Intrathecal adenosine alleviated mechanical allodynia after SMIR and downregulated the spinal cord expression of A1R and CD73, and intrathecal β-methylene ADP or 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine attenuated the analgesic effect of HBO treatment on SMIR-induced CPSP. PERSPECTIVE: Spinal cord adenosine is involved in the occurrence and development of CPSP, and HBO treatment alleviates CPSP by regulating adenosine production/metabolism in the spinal cord. Thus, HBO may be employed for the treatment of CPSP with favorable efficacy.
