Effect of carbetocin, oxytocin and prostaglandin E2 and F2α on intrauterine pressure in cows in dioestrus and oestrus.
To describe the physiological activity of the myometrium in oestrus and dioestrus and the induced activity after medication in cows with particular reference to segmental differences. ⋯ Carbetocin caused the most enduring increase in intrauterine pressure in dioestrus and oestrus and may therefore be indicated best for therapeutic use. The tested drugs had the same effects on the various uterine segments and no effect on the contraction frequency.

[Comparison of the findings of rectal examination and ultrasonographic findings in horses with colic].
The examination of patients suffering from an acute abdomen routinely comprises both clinical and rectal examinations, and is ever more frequently accompanied by an ultrasonographic abdominal examination. The aim of the study was to compare the findings as defined through rectal examination with the results of the ultrasonographic examination for different forms of colic. ⋯ In cases of severe diseases, including small intestinal occlusions and torsions of the large colon, ultrasonography helps to better identify and more precisely diagnose conditions that in most cases require abdominal surgery than rectal examination. Therefore, under hospital conditions, it is highly advisable to include ultrasonography in the routine examination of the equine acute abdomen. However, this technique does not replace the traditional rectal examination, which is superior in the diagnosis of dislocations and constipations of the large colon as well as diseases of the caecum.

Randomized Controlled Trial[Influence of atracurium on cardiovascular parameters in horses undergoing vitrectomy during general anaesthesia, and on recovery duration and quality].
In most ocular procedures, a central position of the eye is necessary. This can be achieved using a deep plane of anaesthesia, locoregional blocks or with neuromuscular blocking agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of atracurium on cardiovascular parameters, and on recovery quality and duration in horses. ⋯ The use of atracurium resulted in a better cardiovascular condition, probably because of the isoflurane-sparing effect. The recovery time was shorter in these horses without negative effects on recovery quality. No signs of residual atracurium effects were detected.

[Measuring body temperature in dairy cows--applications and influencing factors].
Measuring body temperature plays an integral role in early puerperal cow monitoring programs. Furthermore, body temperature is part of the definition of puerperal metritis. Antibiotic treatment decisions are based on body temperature in several international publications on intervention strategies widely adopted in the modern dairy industry. ⋯ Several factors can influence the measurement of the body temperature (type of thermometer, insertion depth, skills of the investigator) as well as the cow's body temperature (days in milk, parity, time of the day, climate at calving). Furthermore, the occurrence of increased body temperature in healthy cows was demonstrated independently by several investigations. In ambiguous cases (e.g. raised body temperature as the only symptom) results should be interpreted with caution.

[Computed tomography of the pig lung. An innovative approach to the definition of the pulmonary health status].
In veterinary medicine computed tomography (CT) imaging has gained importance in recent years, especially for diagnostics in pets, but also during the course of experimental studies in animal models for human medicine. In this study the applicability of CT as an imaging method for the depiction of the porcine thorax and in particular of the pig lung was evaluated. ⋯ Computed tomography is a valuable tool for the high-contrast depiction of the porcine lung without superposition. In future studies this CT reference base for unaltered pig lungs may facilitate the identification of anatomical structures within the porcine lung as well as the assessment of pathological lung alterations.
