Radon-222 concentration in surface water, wells water and tap water in the main towns and villages which are located in area of Izera Plateau has been quantitative determined. The measurements were performed using the alpha liquid scintillation counting method. ⋯ Majority of waterworks in Izera Plateau is supplied with the ground water in which the radon concentration is high: from 113.3 Bq/l to 464.5 Bq/l. The appropriate mean value for water of individual wells was 253.0 Bq/l, within the range from 25.8 Bq/l to 1095.1 Bq/l.

[Assessment of learning conditions in urban and county secondary schools in the first year of education's system reform].
The study was conducted in spring 2000 on the representative national sample of 266 secondary schools. Collected data included information about the organisation of schools, hygienic conditions of classrooms, conditions of regular travelling to schools, using of day-rooms, base for physical education range of supplementary alimentation. It was established that on the contrary to the reforms program (education in different sites) secondary schools were located in 2/3 of cases in the same site with primary schools. ⋯ Both positive and negative aspects of education's conditions in urban and country secondary schools were similar with the exception of better technical status of buildings, more frequently taking offers of supplementary alimentation and more frequently organisation of breakfast at country schools. Urban schools had better conditions at day rooms and frequently owned the physical education halls. Presenting results may serve as a basis for planning activities to support health needs of children at urban and country secondary schools.

In the last decade one can observe an increasing interest in the study of 222Rn levels in water samples. In Poland, radon concentration is measured continuously and routinely only in mineral and medical waters from springs located in the area of health resorts in the Sudety Mountains. The reason for these studies is the fact that waters present in this area have a high radon concentration. ⋯ The next waterworks: "Podgórzyn", "Leśniczówka", "Kamienna Wieza", "Górzyniec" and "Centrum-Jelchem" is supplied with the surface water in which the radon concentration is low: from 1.1 Bq/l to 7.5 Bq/l. The annual effective dose to an individual from an intake of radon-222 via ingestion of drinking water is calculated by the Crawford-Brown's biokinetic model. In the present study it was found to be about 0.9 mSv/y (222Rn concentration level in drinking waters about 200 Bq/l).

[Iron, zinc and copper status in the elderly living in Warsaw district determined by hair analysis].
The aim of this study was to assess the iron, zinc and copper status of elderly people using hair trace element levels determined by using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The samples of hair were taken in May-June 1999 from 73 people aged 75-80 years (50 men and 23 women) living in Warsaw district. The mean content of iron was 17.32 +/- 12.38 micrograms/g dry weight, zinc 176.44 +/- 64.33 micrograms/g d.w. and copper 11.25 +/- 6.32 micrograms/g d.w. ⋯ However it has revealed a trend that female hair contained less iron and more zinc than male hair. The mean copper level was similar for both sexes. It has been found that subject who had not excluded any food products from their diets had higher hair iron contents than those with some dietetic restrictions.
