With the groundbreaking work of three Milan professors-Bonadonna, Veronesi, and Ventafridda-in the 1980s as the starting point, this article aims to shed light on the potential benefits of a closer and more formal integration between oncology and palliative care. More specifically, we address why integration is needed, how to do it, and the potential benefits to the patients, families, and society. The costs for cancer care are increasing rapidly. ⋯ Our present state of knowledge indicates that integration does not shorten life; perhaps even the opposite. Futile oncological treatment can be reduced and the QoL of patients and carers improved. We need more evidence on the potential effect upon costs, but present data indicate that integration does not increase them.

The FAT1 gene is involved in some cancers; however, its role in medulloblastoma is less clear. This study investigated the effects of FAT1 expression on the prognosis of medulloblastoma patients. ⋯ Low FAT1 expression was associated with poor prognosis in children with medulloblastoma. Furthermore, FAT1 may act on Wnt signaling pathway to exert its antitumor effect.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm arising from mesenchymal cells in the areolar tissue subjacent to the mesothelial-lined pleura and accounting for less than 5% of primary pleural tumors. SFTs are generally benign and asymptomatic, with 10-year survival rates of up to 98%. Unfortunately, approximately 10% have malignant potential, leading to local recurrence after radical surgery and/or metastatic spread. Of note, giant pleural SFT, which consists of a tumor occupying at least 40% of the affected hemithorax, is even less common with only anecdotal cases reported in the medical literature. ⋯ Every suspected and proven SFT of the pleura should undergo surgical resection, as clinical and radiological criteria cannot accurately distinguish benign from malignant forms. Moreover, the peculiar histological features of SFT should not be neglected when planning clinicoradiological follow-up. Additionally, suspicious clinical findings during follow-up should always be thoroughly investigated in order to exclude or confirm the diagnosis of recurrent disease.

To investigate the efficacy and prognosis associated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy in patients with locally advanced mucinous rectal cancer (MRC). ⋯ Mucinous rectal cancer is related to a lower response rate to chemoradiotherapy and poorer prognosis compared to NMRC, even when corrected for clinical stage. The poor prognosis in MRC might be associated with poor responsiveness to preoperative chemoradiotherapy.

This retrospective analysis evaluated treatment with trabectedin plus pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) in 34 heavily pretreated patients (median number of previous lines, 3; range, 2-10) with platinum-sensitive relapsed ovarian cancer (ROC) at a single center in Italy. ⋯ The overall findings appear consistent with those previously observed in a randomized controlled clinical trial, and support the use of trabectedin/PLD in heavily pretreated patients with platinum-sensitive ROC, especially those with partially platinum-sensitive disease.
