In 2013, a survey was conducted to analyze the available resources and their use in the radiation treatment of patients with malignancies of the head and neck region in Lombardy, on behalf of the Lombardy group of the Italian Association of Radiation Oncology. ⋯ This survey provides important data on the use of radiotherapy resources for patients with head and neck cancer in Lombardy. The data offer the opportunity to further investigate issues that could better standardize head and neck cancer treatment and allocate resources across the region.

With the recent progress in predictive medicine several problems have emerged regarding the ethical aspects of genetic testing. The role of the doctor in communicating the consequences of such testing to the patient has become more important than ever in allowing the potential patient to make an informed decision.

The objective of this study was to identify possible biomarkers and to explore the mechanisms of suppression of vemurafenib on melanoma progression. ⋯ Cell division cycle 6, CHEK1, E2F1, EGFR, and PIK3R1 of the module and their relative pathways, cell cycle, and focal adhesion might play important roles of suppression of vemurafenib on melanoma progression.

Outcome of crizotinib treatment in a young woman with heavily pretreated ROS1-positive lung cancer.
Non-small-cell lung cancer is a term that encompasses a number of subtypes of lung cancer. In recent years, several intracellular pathways have been studied in order to discover a potential target for novel anticancer therapies such as anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) and reactive oxygen species 1 (ROS1). ⋯ Crizotinib is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor that binds the ALK tyrosine kinase domain, blocking its function. We report the case of a woman with heavily pretreated metastatic lung adenocarcinoma harboring ROS1 positivity who experienced a prolonged and dramatic clinical benefit from crizotinib therapy.

Histological confirmation of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is often required before patients are offered stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) as a treatment option. Many patients, however, are unsuitable to undergo a biopsy procedure because of comorbidity. Our objective is to compare the outcomes of patients with biopsy-proven (BxPr) or clinically/radiographically diagnosed (RadDx) early-stage NSCLC treated with SBRT. ⋯ SBRT is a practical treatment modality for patients with RadDx early-stage NSCLC. Outcomes of patients RadDx with NSCLC mirror the results of patients treated with BxPr disease.
