Comparison of epidemiology and treatment outcome of patients with candidemia at a teaching hospital in Northern Taiwan, in 2002 and 2010.
The incidence of candidemia varied between hospitals and different study periods. Few, if any, studies provide the reasons. This hospital-based population study aimed to describe and compare the patient population hospitalized in 2002 and 2010 and determine the disease-specific incidences of candidemia and evaluate the impact of time to initiate antifungal therapy on 30-day mortality. ⋯ This hospital-based population study demonstrated that the incidence density of candidemia was high and increased in 2010 compared with 2002, which was at least in part due to the increase in the proportion of patients at a higher risk of candidemia. Although antifungal therapy was initiated earlier in 2010, the 30-day mortality remained high.

Viral etiology of bronchiolitis among pediatric inpatients in northern Taiwan with emphasis on newly identified respiratory viruses.
Viral etiology of bronchiolitis in children in Taiwan has been fragmentary. We conducted a prospective study to figure out the viral epidemiology of bronchiolitis in Taiwan. ⋯ RSV was the most common etiologic agent for children with bronchiolitis in Taiwan. Newly identified viruses, including hMPV and hBoV, were also among the common causative agents. Clinical characteristics were not significantly different among the children with bronchiolitis caused by different viruses.

Epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance among commonly encountered bacteria associated with infections and colonization in intensive care units in a university-affiliated hospital in Shanghai.
The aim of this study was to classify intensive care unit (ICU) bacterial strains as either ICU-acquired or ICU-on-admission and to compare their epidemiological and antibiogram characteristics. ⋯ Because of decreasing susceptibility rates of pathogens (especially ICU-acquired strains) and a significant correlation with the length of ICU stay, intensivists should consider a patient's time of ICU admission and previous microbiological data and should distinguish ICU-acquired strains from non-ICU-acquired strains so as to initiate optimized empirical antibiotic therapy against ICU-acquired infections.

Case ReportsUnusual manifestations of Kawasaki disease with retropharyngeal edema and shock syndrome in a Taiwanese child.
We report a 3-year-old girl with Kawasaki disease who presented with retropharyngeal edema and shock syndrome. This is the first reported case in Taiwan. The patient initially presented with fever, cough, and pyuria followed by rapidly progressive enlarged bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy. ⋯ To date, the patient has not experienced any complications. This case illustrates that retropharyngeal edema and shock syndrome can be present in the same clinical course of Kawasaki disease. Clinicians and those who work in intensive care units should be aware of unusual presentations of Kawasaki disease to decrease rates of cardiovascular complications.
