Comparison of lidocaine, lidocaine/epinephrine or bupivacaine for thoracolumbar paravertebral anaesthesia in fat-tailed sheep.
To evaluate the speed of onset and duration of loss of sensation in the flank following paravertebral administration of lidocaine (with or without epinephrine) or bupivacaine. ⋯ Paravertebral administration of bupivacaine produces a longer duration of anaesthesia when compared to lidocaine with or without epinephrine and is indicated when prolonged flank surgery is to be performed.

Effects of a constant rate infusion of detomidine on cardiovascular function, isoflurane requirements and recovery quality in horses.
To examine the influence of a detomidine constant rate infusion (CRI) on cardiovascular function, isoflurane requirements and recovery quality in horses undergoing elective surgery. ⋯ A detomidine CRI produced cardiovascular effects typical for α(2) -agonists, without affecting isoflurane requirements, recovery duration or recovery quality.

Transcutaneous monitor approximates PaCO(2) but not PaO(2) in anesthetized rabbits.
To compare the accuracy of transcutaneous (tc) to arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO(2) ) and partial pressure of oxygen (PaO(2) ) in anesthetized rabbits. ⋯ In healthy anesthetized rabbits, PtcCO(2) closely approximated PaCO(2) . In contrast PtcO(2) underestimated PaO(2) , particularly at high values. The PtcCO(2) sensor may be a useful noninvasive way to assess adequacy of ventilation in anesthetized rabbits.

To characterize the hemodynamic effects of dexmedetomidine in isoflurane-anesthetized cats. ⋯ The use of dexmedetomidine as an anesthetic adjunct is expected to produce greater negative hemodynamic effects than a higher, equipotent concentration of isoflurane alone.

Bispectral index and the clinically evaluated anaesthetic depth in dogs.
This study investigated whether the bispectral index (BIS monitor) corresponded with the clinical assessment of anaesthetic depth in dogs. ⋯ The use of the BIS as the sole method to determine anaesthetic depth in dogs is imprudent.
