Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Comparison of bupivacaine femoral and sciatic nerve block versus bupivacaine and morphine epidural for stifle surgery in dogs.
To evaluate the efficacy of combined femoral and sciatic nerve blocks as an alternative to epidural anesthesia and analgesia in dogs undergoing stifle surgery under general anesthesia. ⋯ F + S is a practical alternative to EPID that produces less urine retention and reduces opioid consumption in the 24 hours after surgery. EPID might be associated with a lower isoflurane requirement and lower systemic blood pressure.

To evaluate if the cerebral state index (CSI), measured by a Cerebral State Monitor (CSM), can predict depth of anaesthesia as assessed clinically or by estimated propofol plasma concentrations. ⋯ The Cerebral State Monitor was able to detect very deep planes of anaesthesia when BSR occurs, but was not able to distinguish between the intermediate anaesthetic planes likely to be used in clinical anaesthesia.
