To review the beneficial and adverse effects of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) applicable to cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in the contexts of various temperature levels and techniques for achieving TH. ⋯ Therapeutic hypothermia is an essential measure of neuroprotection during cardiac surgery that may be achieved most effectively by intravascular cooling using hypothermic CPB. For most cardiac surgical procedures, mild to modest (32-36 °C) TH will be sufficient to assure neuroprotection and will avoid most of the adverse effects of hypothermia that occur at lower body core temperatures.

The effect of butorphanol on the incidence of dexmedetomidine-induced emesis in cats.
Τo evaluate the antiemetic effect of butorphanol (BUT) when co-administered with dexmedetomidine (DEX) in cats. ⋯ Butorphanol can be used to prevent emesis and reduce the incidence and the severity of nausea caused by DEX in cats. It seems that the combination of BUT and DEX is very useful not only when emesis could result in serious complications, but also to provide comfort and well-being in cats sedated for minor procedures.

Comparison of pulmonary artery and transpulmonary thermodilution cardiac output measurements in unsedated newborn calves.
To compare the agreement, repeatability and trending ability of transpulmonary thermodilution (TPTD) and pulmonary artery thermodilution (PATD) cardiac output (Q˙t) measurements in unsedated newborn calves. ⋯ We recommend that PATD remains the reference method to measure Q˙t in unsedated newborn calves. However, the robust results of the evaluation of the less invasive TPTD technique warrants further evaluation taking into account the difficulties reported in this study.
