Sedative and cardiovascular effects of intranasal or intramuscular dexmedetomidine in healthy dogs.
To compare the clinical effects and sedation scores following either intranasal (IN) or intramuscular (IM) administration of dexmedetomidine in dogs. ⋯ Intranasal dexmedetomidine 0.02 mg kg-1 produced effective sedation with less bradycardia and more profound sedation compared to IM administration in healthy dogs and may be considered as an alternative route for dexmedetomidine administration in dogs.

To determine the effects of low and high dose infusions of dexmedetomidine and a peripheral α2-adrenoceptor antagonist, MK-467, on sevoflurane minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) in dogs. ⋯ Dexmedetomidine caused a dose-dependent decrease in sevoflurane MAC, whereas MK-467 caused an increase in MAC at the higher infusion dose. Further studies evaluating the combined effects of dexmedetomidine and MK-467 on MAC and cardiovascular function may elucidate potential benefits of the addition of a peripheral α2-adrenergic antagonist to inhalation anesthesia in dogs.

To compare the duration of action of atracurium in diabetic and nondiabetic dogs. ⋯ Diabetic dogs were older (9.9±0.3 compared with 6.8±0.7 years, p=0.0003). Group parameters were similar at onset and offset of NMB apart from HR at offset, which was higher for diabetics compared to nondiabetics (114±4 compared with 100±3 beats minute-1, respectively, p=0.004), Fe'Iso was higher in the diabetic group at onset (1.3±0.03% compared with 1.2±0.04%, p=0.026) and offset (1.4±0.03% compared with 1.3±0.03%, p=0.007), and temperature was higher for diabetics at onset (37.5±0.1 °C compared with 37.0±0.2 °C, p=0.012) and offset (37.5±0.1 °C compared with 36.9±0.2 °C, p=0.004). The duration of action of atracurium(tactile) and atracurium(EMG) were similar for both groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The duration of action of atracurium was similar in diabetic and nondiabetic dogs as indicated by tactile and EMG monitoring.

Review of hypoxaemia in anaesthetized horses: predisposing factors, consequences and management.
To discuss how hypoxaemia might be harmful and why horses are particularly predisposed to developing it, to review the strategies that are used to manage hypoxaemia in anaesthetized horses, and to describe how successful these strategies are and the adverse effects associated with them. ⋯ Although there is no evidence that hypoxaemia is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in anaesthetized horses, most anaesthetists would agree that it is important to recognise and prevent or treat it. Favourable anatomical and physiological adaptations of a horse for exercise adversely affect gas exchange once the animal is recumbent. Hypoxaemia is recognised more frequently in horses than in other domestic species during general anaesthesia, although its incidence in healthy horses remains unreported. Management of hypoxaemia in anaesthetized horses is challenging and often unsuccessful. Positive pressure ventilation strategies to address alveolar atelectasis in humans have been modified for implementation in recumbent anaesthetized horses, but are often accompanied by unpredictable and unacceptable cardiopulmonary adverse effects, and some strategies are difficult or impossible to achieve in adult horses. Furthermore, anticipated beneficial effects of these techniques are inconsistent. Increasing the inspired fraction of oxygen during anaesthesia is often unsuccessful since much of the impairment in gas exchange is a direct result of shunt. Alternative approaches to the problem involve manipulation of pulmonary blood away from atelectatic regions of the lung to better ventilated areas. However, further work is essential, with particular focus on survival associated with general anaesthesia in horses, before any technique can be accepted into widespread clinical use.

Comparison of arterial blood pressure measurements obtained invasively or oscillometrically using a Datex S/5 Compact monitor in anaesthetised adult horses.
To assess agreement between noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP) oscillometrically-derived values from a multiparameter monitor (Datex Ohmeda S/5 Compact) with those obtained by invasive blood pressure (IBP) measurement in anaesthetised horses undergoing elective surgery. ⋯ Oscillometric blood pressure measurement using the Datex Ohmeda S/5 Compact multiparameter monitor conforms to ACVIM standards when the NIBP cuff is placed on the tail. However, because of the wide variability in measurements, we cannot recommend this technique to guide therapy in anaesthetised adult horses.
