Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Use of laryngeal mask airway compared to endotracheal tube with positive-pressure ventilation in anesthetized swine.
To compare the ease of placement and ventilatory parameters of a laryngeal mask airway (LMA) with an endotracheal tube (ETT) in anesthetized swine during positive-pressure ventilation (PPV). ⋯ An LMA may be used as an alternative to an ETT in mechanically-ventilated anesthetized swine. Use of an LMA may reduce time and personnel required for placement of an airway.

A clinical trial to determine whether continuous infusion administration technique was suitable for maintaining neuromuscular blockade with rocuronium bromide in dogs. ⋯ This protocol of rocuronium administration was considered to be effective in dogs. Constant infusion of rocuronium is easily applicable to clinical practice and further work is required on infusion titration.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Efficacy and cost-effectiveness of transdermal fentanyl patches for the relief of post-operative pain in dogs after anterior cruciate ligament and pelvic limb repair.
To determine whether transdermal fentanyl patches provided cost-effective post-operative analgesia in dogs with pelvic limb injuries. ⋯ When considering overall costs to the client for comparable analgesic intervention, fentanyl patches increased rather than decreased cost during the first 24 hours post-operatively.

To evaluate and compare the effects of the aqueous sulfobutyl ether beta-cyclodextrin (SBE-CD) etomidate formulation and the commercial etomidate formulation on mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate, and sympathetic outflow using neuraxis-intact and baro-denervated rabbits. ⋯ Etomidate in the commercial drug product is solubilized with propylene glycol, a cosolvent associated with adverse side effects on injection. An aqueous formulation of etomidate has been developed, which utilizes SBE-CD as a solubilizing agent. The data suggest that the SBE-CD etomidate formulation may be a safer IV induction formulation than the commercial etomidate drug product.

Orotracheal intubation is a commonly performed procedure in the cat, but it is not without complications. Tracheal rupture has been reported in cats, but trauma to the arytenoids from intubation has not been documented. ⋯ Direct observation and proper technique must be employed during orotracheal intubation in cats in an attempt to avoid laryngeal trauma.
