Observational StudyFeasibility of self-sampling and human papillomavirus testing in rural and urban areas for cervical cancer prevention in Bolivia: an observational study.
Cervical cancer is a major health problem in Latin America. In 2019, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (La Paz regional site) conducted a pilot study to estimate the prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) and the feasibility of HPV screening in Bolivia through self-sampling and portable and transportable laboratory instruments for HPV testing in urban and rural areas. ⋯ Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), as a part of an ongoing technical assistance programme with the Bolivian Ministry of Health.

Identifying areas at risk of endometrial cancer increase in Latin America: development of a geospatial model.
Endometrial cancer is presently the most common gynaecological cancer in high-income countries due to factors such as population aging and obesity, which leads to high oestrogen concentrations and is linked to abnormal endometrial cell proliferation. Obesity is a global health issue; more than 20% of people in Latin America are currently obese, and approximately 58% are overweight. The purpose of this study was to analyse obesity rates and the evolution of the female population older than 65 years of age in Latin American and Caribbean countries, mapping areas at high risk of increase in the incidence of endometrial cancer in the coming years. ⋯ None.

Oral lichen planus and the Thr102Cys polymorphism of HTR2A: a pilot case-control study.
Oral cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the world, leading to over 177 000 deaths worldwide annually. The literature suggests that oral cancer might be preceded by potentially malignant oral lesions, such as oral lichen planus, a multifactorial chronic inflammatory condition with an autoimmune component. Smoking and alcohol consumption are two of the many triggers of oral lichen planus and oral cancer. Both habits have likewise been associated with the Thr102Cys polymorphisms in the HTR2A gene, which codes the 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2A (5-HT-2A). The aim of this study was to investigate the Thr102Cys polymorphism rs6313 (NG_013011.1:g.6230C>T on GenBank) in the HTR2A gene in patients with oral lichen planus, and to explore its association with smoking and alcohol consumption. ⋯ None.

Cancer registry operations in the Caribbean during the COVID-19 pandemic: a report of lessons learned and opportunities identified to support strong and sustainable health systems.
Population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) are crucial for cancer prevention and control planning. Building and maintaining resilient information systems within cancer registries that enable consistent and uninterrupted operations during public health emergencies is important. We report on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the operations of Caribbean PBCRs, together with opportunities, lessons learned, and strategies to strengthen and sustain PBCR operation and data quality. ⋯ Financial support for the Hub is provided by the Caribbean Public Health Agency and the US National Cancer Institute, with in-kind support from International Agency for Research on Cancer, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Caribbean PBCRs are funded by their respective Governments. This work received no specific funding.

Observational StudyPlace of death of people with cancer in 12 Latin American countries: a total population study using national death registers.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in almost all Latin American countries. Knowing where people with cancer die and understanding the factors that affect where they die are public health issues, relevant for the development of policies that ensure the provision of adequate end-of-life care in alignment with patients' needs and preferences. The objective of this study was to describe and compare the place of death of people with cancer in 12 Latin American countries, and explore associated factors. ⋯ None.
