Randomized Controlled TrialGabapentin-induced changes of plasma cortisol level and immune status in hysterectomized women.
We have examined the effects of gabapentin (GBP) on stress-related changes of cortisol and catecholamines in patients who underwent hysterectomy because of uterine fibrinoids. Additionally, we have observed the effect of GBP on the immune status in the acute stress response to surgery. ⋯ Preoperative administration of GBP reduced the pain scores at rest in patients at 0, 16 and 24h after abdominal hysterectomy. Additionally, GBP reduced the stress response and changed immune parameters in the reaction to surgery.

Hydroxysafflor yellow A ameliorates lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury in mice via modulating toll-like receptor 4 signaling pathways.
Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) is a main bio-active compound important of a traditional Chinese medicine named Carthamus tinctorius L. and has been shown to possess various effects, especially anti-inflammatory benefits and potential protections against acute lung injury (ALI) in previous studies. Therefore, in this present study, we aimed to evaluating effects of HSYA on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI in mice. ALI was induced by intratracheal instillation of LPS into lung, and dexamethasone was used as a positive control. ⋯ In addition, the activations of mitogen-activated protein kinases including p38, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) were blocked by HSYA. And also, the phosphorylations of interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3), translocation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB)/p65 and inhibitory kappa B (IκB)-α were inhibited by HSYA. In conclusion, HSYA attenuated inflammatory response in ALI mice through inhibition of TLR 4-dependent signaling pathways.

ReviewVitamin E and D regulation of allergic asthma immunopathogenesis.
Asthma occurs as complex interactions of the environmental and genetics. Clinical studies and animal models of asthma indicate dietary factors such as vitamin E and vitamin D as protective for asthma risk. In this review, we discuss opposing regulatory functions of tocopherol isoforms of vitamin E and regulatory functions of vitamin D in asthma and how the variation in global prevalence of asthma may be explained, at least in part, by these dietary components.

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) has been identified to be a critical mediator of severe sepsis. Ketamine has been shown to reduce sepsis-induced pathological complications. These effects are because of the reduced expression and release of several inflammatory mediators. ⋯ Rats treated with ketamine improved survival in rats and significantly reduced CLP-induced dysfunction/injury of organs. Ketamine suppresses LPS-induced HMGB1 release in LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells and a CLP-induced model of sepsis in rats by partially inhibiting NF-κB/p38 MAPK pathways. Ketamine increased survival time induced by CLP and reduced organ dysfunction in septic peritonitis.

Review Meta AnalysisCombined immunotherapy with dendritic cells and cytokine-induced killer cells for malignant tumors: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
A new strategy of adoptive and passive immunotherapy involves combining dendritic cells (DCs) with a subset of natural killer T lymphocytes termed cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of DC-CIK therapy vs. placebo, no intervention, conventional treatments, or other complementary and alternative medicines for malignant tumors. ⋯ DC-CIK immunotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for patients with malignant tumors. Further clinical trials to provide supportive evidence for the routine use of DC-CIK therapy in clinical practice are warranted.
