Nurse education in practice

Practicing in unprecedented working environment and fighting against the COVID-19 crisis influenced the image of nursing in the general population, as well as among nurses themselves. This study aimed to describe the sense of professional identity among Chinese nursing students during the COVID-19 outbreak and to explore the relationship between psychological resilience and the sense of professional identity in this cohort. A nationwide online cross-sectional survey was conducted. ⋯ Psychological resilience was the strongest contributor to professional identity (β = 0.371, P < 0.001). There was a high level of professional identity among Chinese nursing students during the COVID-19 crisis. Policy support and courses to enhance psychological resilience are critical to sustain professional identity among nursing students.

Focusing on explicit debriefing for novice learners in healthcare simulations: A randomized prospective study.
Debriefing is essential in simulation-based training, but it is not clear what exactly constitutes a successful debriefing session. Research in educational sciences shows that a structured, explicit and trainer-directed approach is systematically more effective than an implicit, reflective approach with minimal guidance, particularly for novice or intermediate learners. The aim of this study is to compare explicit strongly trainer-guided debriefing with implicit and weakly guided debriefing in nursing training. ⋯ Although the results revealed a beneficial effect of simulation training on self-efficacy, the explicit debriefing technique was shown to produce greater knowledge improvement than the implicit debriefing method in novice learners. Consequently, debriefing technique should be adapted to the objectives of the training and learners.

The purpose of this descriptive, qualitative research study was to explore a nursing residency students' perception of clinical decision making and clinical judgment as evidenced through reflective journaling. Seven Registered Nurses completed a one year Baccalaureate Degree, while concurrently participating in a nursing residency. Reflective Journals focusing on clinical incidences during the residency were analyzed using the Tanner's Model of Clinical Judgement (2006). ⋯ Eight themes were identified throughout the three phases. A nursing residency is an exceptional transformative pedagogical methodology for skill/knowledge acquisition allowing for a deeper engagement in enhanced confidence, self-analysis and progression to professional socialization. In addition, reflective journaling is a viable method for the self-analysis of clinical decision making through the experience of a nursing residency.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has spread rapidly in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. Considering the recent outbreak of COVID-19, some precautionary measures have been announced, including campus class suspensions. ⋯ A virtual classroom education approach may help address the learning gap by providing ongoing theoretical strengthening of hand hygiene during clinical nursing training. This editorial proposes a 3-step virtual classroom education approach to support nursing educators in online theoretical hand hygiene enhancement.
