Retrospective case-control study exploring pretransplant predictors for loss of kidney transplant function or death among indigenous kidney transplant recipients.
The factors affecting the outcomes among Indigenous kidney transplant recipients is not fully understood. We conducted a retrospective case control study to identify risk factors beyond those explained by the ANZDATA registry. ⋯ Early graft loss was associated with a higher frequency of hospital admissions in the 2-years pretransplant period. In contrast, other measured factors in the pretransplant period did not predict these adverse outcomes.

A longitudinal population-based study of progression rates for borderline TSH abnormalities.
Current guidelines recommend thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) for initial biochemical evaluation of thyroid function, with borderline TSH abnormalities a common finding. The likelihood of a borderline TSH progressing to overt abnormality is not well characterised at the population level. ⋯ Follow-up intervals for patients with borderline TSH abnormalities should take into account patient age as a progression risk factor.

Proton pump inhibitor use and the risk of peritoneal dialysis associated peritonitis.
The use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) has been associated with an increased risk of developing spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in patients with cirrhosis. Whether PPI use confers a similar risk in developing peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients remains unclear. ⋯ PPI use during PD was not associated with peritonitis. Due to the small number of patients and the limited number of studies investigating the effect of PPI use on PD peritonitis, further research is needed.

Ethiological, Clinical and Therapeutic Prognostic Factors for the Evolution of Deep Vein Thrombosis Followed-Up by Serial Venous Doppler Ultrasound.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a dynamic process that can be followed up with Doppler ultrasound (DUS). ⋯ DVT evolution can last up to 24 months. Older age, strong VTE RF, proximal DVT localisation and late start of therapy constitute unfavourable evolutive prognosis. These cases need closer clinical and DUS monitoring to prevent complications.

Inpatient Cardiac Care for Acute Coronary Syndromes in the Top End of Australia.
Disparities in cardiovascular outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and non-Indigenous Australians persist. This has previously been attributed to a combination of differences in burden of cardiovascular disease risk factors, and inpatient access to guideline-recommended care. ⋯ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients received similar inpatient ACS care and secondary prevention medication at discharge, with similar short-term mortality outcomes as non-indigenous patients. While encouraging, these outcomes may not persist long term. Further outcomes research is required, with differences compelling consideration of other primary and secondary prevention contributors.
