Recombinant human soluble thrombomodulin (rTM) was approved recently and has been used for treatment of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of rTM for DIC. The data of 53 inpatients with sepsis-induced DIC were retrospectively analyzed. ⋯ Significant intra-group improvements were observed in all the parameters, except for FDP in the two groups. Significant improvements were observed in the DIC scores in the rTM group (Δ2.0±1.9 vs. Δ1.5±1.9, P=0.001). Therefore, the results suggest that rTM would be a useful medicine for treatment of DIC in the gastroenterology field.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the roles of Rho protein A (RhoA) and Rho kinases 2 (ROCK2) in the memory dysfunction of adult rats exposed to sevoflurane at postnatal days 7-9 (P7-9). One-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups known as C, S1, S3 and F. Rats in the S1 (2 h at P7) and S3 groups (2 h/day at P7-9) were exposed to sevoflurane. ⋯ Compared to the C group, the expression of RhoA, ROCK2 and Cl-Csp3 in the hippocampus of the S1 group had no significant difference (P>0.05). Multiple inhalation of sevoflurane can induce neurotoxicity and memory dysfunction. RhoA and ROCK2 played important roles in the impairment of learning and memory of adults rats exposed to sevoflurane at the postnatal early stage.

Naringenin, a flavonoid abundant in citrus fruits, such as grapefruits, has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory properties. The present study aimed to investigate the analgesic potential of naringenin in L5 spinal nerve ligation (SNL)-induced peripheral neuropathic pain and the underlying mechanisms associated with neuroinflammation. Different doses of naringenin or saline were administered intrathecally once daily for 11 consecutive days, from 3 days prior to surgery to 7 days after surgery. ⋯ Furthermore, naringenin significantly inhibited SNL-induced activation of glial cells (astrocytes and microglia). Morover, the upregulated expression of inflammatory mediators in neuropathic pain was significantly inhibited by naringenin. Our findings suggested that repeated administration of naringenin may alleviate neuropathic pain, possibly through inhibiting neuroinflammation.

The aim of this study was to examine the manner in which varying proportions of serum and red blood cells (RBC) in massive blood transfusion affect the survival rates of patients with severe blood loss. Massive transfusion (MT) was determined as receiving ≥10 units of red blood cells in 24 h. ⋯ In total, 1,658 patients underwent MT during the period 2002-2011, with an overall of 28,030 units RBC, accounting for 2.8% of the total blood transfusion. In conclusion, fixing blood-component ratios has the potential to help improve survival rate in MT.
