Critically ill children frequently receive inadequate nutritional support. Feeding protocols have been shown to facilitate optimal nutritional care. ⋯ This study found that nursing experience and level of education do not significantly affect the readiness of nurses to adopt a feeding protocol. Medical and nursing teams should not shy away from introducing a new protocol although their nurses have little experience or prior knowledge of that protocol. Future studies to investigate the impact of tailoring of educational needs before introduction of a new protocol are necessary to study the overall effectiveness of this teaching before introducing a new protocol in the ICU.

Living with heart failure is a complex situation for family caregivers. Many studies addressing the challenges faced by heart failure family caregivers have already been conducted in Western societal settings. Sociocultural factors and perspectives influence the family caring experience and roles. The ethnic/culturally based differences in family caring behavior make this a subject worth further exploration and clarification. ⋯ The care performed by the caregivers of patients with heart failure exceeds their individual capabilities. Nurses, other healthcare providers, and health policy makers may use the findings of this study to develop more effective programs to address these challenges and to provide more effective support.Sociocultural factors and perspectives were the primary factors affecting the caregiving experiences of participants in this study. Improved understanding of these factors and perspectives will help healthcare providers develop and implement suitable intervention programs for caregivers. Healthcare professionals should develop context-based intervention programs to promote caregiver capabilities and encourage caregivers to participate to facilitate the caregiving roles of caregivers.

The communication competence of nurses working in emergency medical center settings is essential to establish a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship. Education and strategic development are required to improve the communication competence of emergency room (ER) nurses. ⋯ This study supported the presence of significant correlations among communication competence, self-efficacy, and job satisfaction. Thus, it is necessary to develop training programs that are customized to individual characteristics such as self-efficacy and job satisfaction to improve the communicative competence of ER nurses.

High prevalence rates of delirium have been found in intensive care units (ICUs), ranging from 20% to 80%. The development of delirium may prolong length of stay, impair cognition, and result in placement in a nursing home for the patient. ⋯ Delirium is a severe problem among elderly patients in the ICU. Healthcare professionals should pay more attention to elderly patients at greater risk for experiencing delirium.

Poor quality of sleep may result in more problems for patients who undergo weaning from mechanical ventilation because it could result in disabled muscle relaxation and affect the function of the respiratory muscles. Few studies have specifically investigated what factors contributed to quality of sleep and weaning outcomes. ⋯ A strong relationship was identified between disease severity and quality of sleep. Both factors are significant predictors of successful weaning from mechanical ventilation. A better understanding of the related risk factors will help improve the care provided by nurses and medical personnel to patients undergoing the weaning process.
