The aim of this study was to determine if any of the factors recorded on a standard clinical history of a patient considered for spinal cord stimulation (SCS) would be associated with reduction or cessation of opioids following implantation. ⋯ The elimination of opioid dependence following initiation of SCS therapy is highly dependent on the daily dose.

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether distorted body perception is a feature of the low back pain (LBP) experience in people with cerebral palsy (CP) and whether any distortions noted are confounded by the presence of motor and postural impairments commonly seen in CP. ⋯ The present results suggest that body image is disrupted in people with CP who experience LBP. The disruptions in perception were similar to those seen in people with LBP and no CP, suggesting that the distortions may be more related to the presence of pain than the presence of CP.

Numerous experimental models have shown that microRNAs (miRNAs)play an important role in regulating pain processing in clinical pain disorders. In this study, we evaluated a set of miRNAs as diagnostic biomarkers of pain intensity in adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). We then correlated the expression of these miRNAs with the levels of inflammatory markers and pain-related comorbidities in adolescents with CFS and healthy controls (HCs). ⋯ The intensity and consequences of pain were influenced by differential expression of miR-558, miR-146a, miR-150, miR-124, and miR-143, which was directly associated with higher expression of the immune inflammatory-related genes TNFα, IL-6, and COX-2 in adolescents with CFS. Further studies of larger patient cohorts will help clarify the role of miRNAs in the pathogenesis of CFS.

To investigate whether people with chronic low back pain (LBP) show dysfunctional exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) in response to repeated contractions of their back muscles during a lifting task. ⋯ Unlike asymptomatic individuals, participants with LBP lacked EIH over the lumbar erector spinae muscles following repeated lifting. Although these results should be considered in relation to the study limitations, particularly the absence of a control group, the findings support impaired EIH in patients with LBP.

Pain and Distraction According to Sensory Modalities: Current Findings and Future Directions.
This review discusses the findings in the literature on pain and distraction tasks according to their sensory modality. Distraction tasks have been shown to reduce (experimentally induced) acute pain and chronic pain. This can be influenced by nature and by the sensory modalities used in the distraction tasks. Yet the effect on reducing pain according to the sensory modality of the distraction task has received little attention. ⋯ Distraction tasks by diverse sensory modalities have a positive effect on decreasing the perception of acute pain in adults. Future studies are necessary given the paucity of research on this topic, particularly with tactile distractors (there is only one study). Finally, the most rigorous methodology and the use of ecological contexts are encouraged in future research.
