Patient and Process Outcomes Among Pediatric Patients Undergoing Appendectomy During the COVID-19 Pandemic - an International Retrospective Cohort study.
COVID-19 forced healthcare systems to make unprecedented changes in clinical care processes. The authors hypothesized that the COVID-19 pandemic adversely impacted timely access to care, perioperative processes, and clinical outcomes for pediatric patients undergoing primary appendectomy. ⋯ For children undergoing appendectomy, the COVID-19 pandemic did not significantly impact hospital length of stay.

Understanding the Intricacies of Delivering Compassionate Care in the Intensive Care Unit and What Hinders It: A Qualitative Study of Members of 2 Critical Care Societies.
Patient-centered care is increasing in importance especially in the post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic era. We sought to understand factors affecting compassionate care faced by intensivists in the intensive care unit (ICU). ⋯ Compassionate attitudes can be hindered by an underlying worry about the decision made by the patient and their family, a lack of confidence in making hard moral decisions, and the burdens of burnout.

Deaths at home, area-based deprivation and the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic: An analysis of mortality data across four nations.
The number and proportion of home deaths in the UK increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is not known whether these changes were experienced disproportionately by people from different socioeconomic groups. ⋯ The Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated a previously described socioeconomic inequality in place of death in the UK. Further research to understand the reasons for this change and if this inequality has been sustained is needed.

A retrospective review of Immunology patients with primary and/or secondary immunodeficiency, demonstrating the benefits of the rapid transitioning from intravenous immunoglobulin to subcutaneous immunoglobulin at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Forty-four of 50 immunology patients with primary or secondary immunodeficiency receiving intravenous immunoglobulin at a hospital in New South Wales, Australia, were rapidly enrolled in the subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIg) programme at the onset of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Health and economic outcomes demonstrated that SCIg provides clinical efficacy as evidenced by the number of infections and maintenance of IgG levels, and also facilitates cost reduction in immunoglobulin maintenance programmes.

General practice experienced significant challenges throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been little exploration of the experiences of nurses working in general practice and the impact on care delivery, job satisfaction, workload, stress and professional support. Understanding these experiences can inform future practice. ⋯ The pandemic has laid bare challenges faced by nurses in general practice. Nurses require specific support to maintain professional wellbeing and to aid retention.
