Although many concerns have been raised on increased self-harm or suicide attempts since the emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the numbers of studies reported no consistent increase. This study aimed to analyze the data on the request for emergency medical service (EMS) in Daegu Metropolitan City in Korea to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence and types of suicidal patients. Data of 4480 cases requesting EMS related to self-harm or suicide 1 year before and after the COVID-19 pandemic were retrospectively comparatively analyzed (February 19, 2019-February 18, 2021). ⋯ In multivariate regression analysis, women (OR 1.227, 95% CI = 1.072-1.405, P = .003), patients with psychiatric diseases (OR 1.223, 95% CI = 1.031-1.450, P = .021), patients with other chronic illnesses (OR 1.510, 95% CI = 1.127-2.023, P = .006), and CO or gas poisoning (not attempted) (OR 1.349, 95% CI = 1.038-1.753, P = .025) showed statistically significant differences. Among the request for EMS, requests for committed self-harm and attempts to commit suicide increased. Medical support and measures for mental health and emergency medical systems should be established for female patients and patients with psychiatric or other chronic diseases.

To determine the prevalence of sleep disturbance during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic among US adults who are more vulnerable to complications because of age and co-morbid conditions, and to identify associated sociodemographic and psychosocial factors. Cross-sectional survey linked to 3 active clinical trials and 2 cohort studies, conducted between 11/30/2020 and 3/3/2021. Five academic internal medicine practices and 2 federally qualified health centers. ⋯ In this diverse sample of adults with chronic conditions, by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, disparities in sleep health amid the ongoing pandemic were apparent. Worse physical function and mental health were associated with poor sleep and should be considered targets for health system interventions to prevent the many subsequent consequences of disturbed sleep on health outcomes. Measurements: self-reported sleep quality, physical function, stress, depression, and anxiety.

Endoscopic evaluation during the COVID-19 pandemic: Observational study of the experience in community practices.
Endoscopic screening is used widely to minimize the rates of colorectal cancer cases and deaths. During highly virulent infectious disease pandemics such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, it is essential to weigh the risks and benefits of receiving endoscopy, especially in regions with moderately high viral infection rates. An observational study was conducted to assess the number of patients seen for endoscopic procedure at 2 of our surgery centers. ⋯ This study considers the rate of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection along with the number of colorectal cancer cases encountered at a community endoscopy center to suggest that the benefits of undergoing endoscopic evaluation may outweigh the risks of attending an endoscopy procedure during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the main reasons patients underwent endoscopic procedure was for colon cancer screenings (41.9%), and 5 of 1020 patients seen during the observation period were diagnosed with cancer. Of these 1020 patients, 8 were found to have positive tests for COVID-19 within 2 to 4 weeks after their procedure.

Acute respiratory tract infections pose a serious threat to the health of children worldwide, with viral infections representing a major etiology of this type of disease. Protective measures such as mask-wearing, social distancing, and hand hygiene can be effective in curbing the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. These precautions may also have an impact on the spread of other respiratory viruses. ⋯ Nine common respiratory viruses including human bocavirus, human rhinoviruses, human coronaviruses, human adenoviruses, human metapneumovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza A virus, influenza B virus, and parainfluenza virus were measured by advanced fragment analysis. The respiratory virus infection rates among children of all ages and genders in Southwest China under the precautions against COVID-19 pandemic were significantly lower than that of the same period before the pandemic. Our findings indicate that public health measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, including strict mask-wearing, social distancing, and hand hygiene, may be effective in preventing the transmission of other respiratory viruses in children, thereby controlling the spread of infections.

Background and Objectives: Italy was the first country in Europe to face the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and its consequences, which led to two phases of severe restrictions for its population. This study aims to estimate the connections between the trauma of the COVID-19 emergency and the clinical features of a sample of outpatients in a Milan Community Mental Health setting, comparing the first (April 2020) and second lockdowns (November 2020). Materials and Methods: The sample included 116 consecutive outpatients recruited in April 2020 and 116 in November 2020. ⋯ In the November group, the most central items were represented by Conceptual Disorganization and Emotional Withdrawal, whereas the strongest connections were found between IES-Arousal and IES-Intrusion, Excitement and Grandiosity, and Unusual Thought Content and Conceptual Disorganization. Conclusions: Our findings show continued high distress levels and increased psychological burdens during the second phase of restrictions; this could be described as "pandemic fatigue", a general psychological weariness due to pandemic-related restrictions, as well as a lack of motivation to comply with them. As mental health professionals, our mission during these difficult times has been to keep community psychiatry services accessible, with particular regard to vulnerable and marginalized populations.
