ReviewZinc supplementation for preventing mortality, morbidity, and growth failure in children aged 6 months to 12 years.
Zinc deficiency is prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, and is considered a significant risk factor for morbidity, mortality, and linear growth failure. The effectiveness of preventive zinc supplementation in reducing prevalence of zinc deficiency needs to be assessed. ⋯ Even though we included 16 new studies in this update, the overall conclusions of the review remain unchanged. Zinc supplementation might help prevent episodes of diarrhea and improve growth slightly, particularly in children aged 6 months to 12 years of age. The benefits of preventive zinc supplementation may outweigh the harms in regions where the risk of zinc deficiency is relatively high.

Salivary gland tumors account for approximately 3% of all tumors, most of which are benign, with pleomorphic adenomas being the most common, occurring mostly in middle-aged women, mostly originating from the major salivary glands and, to a lesser extent, from the minor salivary glands, with the tongue being a very rare site of occurrence. To date, case reports of pleomorphic adenoma at the root of the tongue are also rare. ⋯ It is very rare to find a pleomorphic adenoma of the tongue, and it occurs mostly in middle-aged women. In clinical diagnosis, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish it from malignant tumor of the tongue.

We assessed the clinicopathological features and prognostic values of KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, and DNA mismatch repair status in colorectal cancer (CRC) to provide real-world data in developing countries. We enrolled 369 CRC patients and analyzed the correlation between RAS/BRAF mutation, mismatch repair status with clinicopathological features, and their prognostic roles. The mutation frequencies of KRAS, NRAS, and BRAF were 41.7%, 1.6%, and 3.8%, respectively. ⋯ The dMMR status predominated in young and middle-aged patients and tumor node metastasis stage II patients. dMMR status predicted longer overall survival in all CRC patients. KRAS mutations indicated inferior overall survival in patients with CRC stage IV. Our study showed that KRAS mutations and dMMR status could be applied to CRC patients with different clinicopathological features.

Women of reproductive age are less prone to cardiovascular disease than men. However, diabetes mellitus negates this female advantage. The prevalence change of prediabetes (prediabetes mellitus) and diabetes mellitus and diabetes mellitus‒associated cardiovascular risk factors have not been clearly described in women before menopause. ⋯ Premenopausal women had increased prediabetes mellitus and undiagnosed diabetes mellitus in the past 2 decades. They face a considerable cardiovascular risk burden associated with prediabetes mellitus and diabetes mellitus. Cardiometabolic risk screening and patient education should be improved in young and early middle-aged adults, particularly in women.

Long-term diseases often co-occur with musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. In middle-aged individuals with MSK pain, it remains unclear whether an accumulation (two or more) of long-term diseases is associated with MSK pain dimensions, including pain frequency, bothersomeness of pain, pain intensity and number of pain sites. ⋯ This study on middle-aged individuals with musculoskeletal pain showed that the presence of long-term diseases was clearly associated with pain frequency, bothersomeness of pain, pain intensity and number of pain sites. Compared with no long-term diseases, the association between accumulated (two or more) long-term diseases and pain dimensions was stronger than the association between one long-term disease and pain dimensions.
