Childhood mortality is high in low- and middle-income countries. Burns are one of the five leading causes of childhood injury mortality in South Africa (SA). While there is an abundance of literature on burns in the developed world, there are far fewer publications dealing with childhood mortality related to burns in Africa and SA. ⋯ Our overall mortality rate was 7.9%, and the rate declined significantly over the 3-year study period from 11.7% to 5.1%. Age ≤5 years, the presence of inhalational injury, burn injury >30% of TBSA and admission to the PBICU were significant risk factors for mortality.

Case ReportsSpontaneous rupture of the splenic artery aneurysm: a rare clinical presentation of acute abdomen.
Splenic artery aneurysms are very rare causes of acute abdomen but are important to recognize since they carry high rate of mortality when ruptured. The aim of this study was to present a middle aged man with sudden onset of abdominal pain. ⋯ Splenectomy en bloc with the aneurysmatic distal splenic artery was performed, and he was discharged uneventfully. Despite rare, it is important to recognize splenic artery aneurysm in the emergency department, and immediate intervention is required to save the patient.

The 18th Collegium Ramazzini statement: The global health dimensions of asbestos and asbestos-related diseases.
The Collegium Ramazzini reaffirms its long-standing position that responsible public health action is to ban all extraction and use of asbestos, including chrysotile. This current statement updates the Collegium's earlier statements with a focus on global health dimensions of asbestos and asbestos-related diseases (ARD). ⋯ Industrialized countries that have already gone through the transition to an asbestos ban have learned lessons and acquired know-how and capacity that could be of great value if deployed in industrializing countries embarking on the transition. The accumulated wealth of experience and technologies in industrialized countries should thus be shared internationally through global campaigns to eliminate ARD.

Safety and immunogenicity of high-dose trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine in adults 50-64 years of age.
Individuals 50-64 years of age have reduced immune responses to influenza vaccines. The current study examined whether a high-dose inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine (IIV3-HD) might improve immune responses over a standard-dose inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV3-SD) in this age group. ⋯ The study suggests that in adults 50-64 years of age, IIV3-HD may improve immunogenicity compared to IIV3-SD while maintaining an acceptable safety profile.
