Characterization of sleep, emotional and cognitive functions in a new rat model of concomitant spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries.
Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord or the brain have serious medical consequences and lead to long-term disability. The epidemiology, medical complications, and prognosis of isolated spinal cord injury (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been well described. However, there are limited data on patients suffering from concurrent SCI and TBI, even if a large proportion of SCI patients have concomitant TBI. ⋯ We report that SCI-TBI and SCI groups show similar impairments in global locomotor function. While wake/sleep amount and distribution and anxiety- and depression-like symptoms were not affected in SCI-TBI and SCI groups in comparison to the control group (laminectomy and craniotomy only), working memory was impaired only in SCI-TBI rats. This pre-clinical model of concomitant SCI and TBI, including more severe variations of it, shows a translational value for the identification of biomarkers to refine the "dual-diagnosis" of neurotrauma in humans.

Post-traumatic hydrocephalus (PTH) is a complication following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to improving outcomes. We report the incidence and risk factors of PTH in a large TBI population while considering death as a competing risk. ⋯ We describe the incidence and risk factors for PTH in a large traumatic brain injury (TBI) population. Most cases of PTH were diagnosed after hospital discharge, suggesting that close follow-up and multidisciplinary diagnostic vigilance for PTH are needed to prevent morbidity and disability.

To analyze the mediating effects of caregiver illness uncertainty and psychological resilience in caregiver burden and readiness in patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). This can help improve caregiver readiness in patients with moderate-to-severe TBIs. ⋯ Caregiver burden in patients with moderate-to-severe TBI influences caregiver readiness levels and is mediated by illness uncertainty and psychological resilience. By improving caregivers' illness uncertainty and increasing their psychological resilience, the impact of low caregiver readiness caused by high caregiver burden could be reduced.

Association Between Frailty and Head Impact Location After Ground-Level Fall in Older Adults.
Mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are highly prevalent in older adults, and ground-level falls are the most frequent mechanism of injury. ⋯ This study found an association between the level of frailty and the head impact location in older patients who sustained a ground-level fall. Our results suggest that head impact location after a fall can help physicians identify frail patients. Although not statistically significant, the prevalence of intracranial hemorrhage seems to increase with the level of frailty.
