By now, the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing. The development of various CKD is attributed to the continuous aggravation of renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) in the process of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Oral treatment of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the therapies for RIF. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of TCM treatment RIF have been reported, but its effectiveness and safety have yet been systematically investigated. Therefore, through the systematic analysis and meta-analysis, our study will summarize the effectiveness and safety of oral treatment RIF of TCM, in order to provides scientific reference for clinical practice. ⋯ Some more targeted and practical results about the efficacy of taking TCM orally in RIF have been provided by our study. The available evidence suggests that the therapeutic effects of combining TCM with Western medicine therapies is much better for RIF than Western medicine therapies only.

Diarrheal disease currently claims the lives of approximately 500,000 children each year. Rotaviruses are the pathogens primarily responsible for more severe cases and more than one-third of diarrhea-associated deaths in children under 5 years old globally. At present, commonly used drug therapies for rotavirus diarrhea in Western medicine, such as oral rehydration salts, montmorillonite, probiotics, and nitazoxanide, often cannot achieve satisfactory curative effects. Moreover, infants' and children's compliance with drugs and injections is often lower than their compliance with acupoint application therapy. A large number of studies have shown that acupoint application can increase the clinical cure rate and shorten the duration of diarrhea. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews on the safety and efficacy of acupoint application in the treatment of rotavirus diarrhea. Therefore, we will conduct a study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of acupoint application for rotavirus diarrhea in infants and children. ⋯ INPLASY202070123.

Reduced bone mineral density and increased risk of falls are related with Alzheimer disease, and these increase likelihood of bone osteoporotic fractures causing serious complications such as disability, fear of falling, loss autonomy, decreased quality of life, and anticipated mortality in elderly patients. Gait and balance disturb are 2 factors to favor falls in elderly, and in patients with cognitive impairment, the risk of falls increases to double. Exercise and Mediterranean diet produce beneficial effects for aging, cognitive decline, and are widely recommended to reduce the effects of osteoporosis, fall risk, and related fragility fractures. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the short and medium-term effects during 6 months, of a multicomponent physical exercise program with a Mediterranean diet on bone mineral density, fall risk, balance, and gait by a controlled clinical trial in patients with Alzheimer disease. ⋯ This study protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Salamanca. The results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated in national and international conferences, to the participants and their families, and the general public through the associations of people with AD.

Dementia among the Japanese aged 65 years or over population is estimated to approach about 700 million cases by 2025, and a corresponding rapid increase in Alzheimer disease (AD) can also be expected. The ballooning number of dementia patients, including AD, is creating major medical and social challenges. At present, only 3 drugs are recognized for the treatment of mild AD, and these are only used to alleviate symptoms. Although new therapies are needed to treat mild AD, insufficient development of disease-modifying drugs is being done. ⋯ This is the first trial of Kampo medicine designed to examine the efficacy of HJG for the cognitive dysfunction of patients with mild AD.

To investigate the risk of mortality associated with exposure to codeine, considering various risk groups, using population-based national insurance claims data. National sample cohort data from the National Health Insurance Service of South Korea (2002-2013) was used in this case-control study. Cases were defined as patients with a death record between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2013. ⋯ However, in the subgroup analyses, codeine use was associated with an increased risk of mortality in the >85-year-old age group (aOR 2.38, 95% CI 1.26-4.48) and patients with respiratory disease (aOR 1.29, 95% CI 1.17-1.42). Although no statistically significant association was found in codeine exposure and mortality risk between cases and controls, we demonstrated that the elderly over 85 years old and patients with respiratory disease are associated with a higher risk with codeine exposure. Therefore, a more cautious practice of codeine prescription in these groups might be needed.
