A cross-sectional sampling survey of mothers' practice of ORT in Amphoe Bunpotphesai in the northern part of Thailand included 1,619 children under five. Two hundred and six children were reported to have 223 diarrheal episodes. The incidence of diarrhea in children under five was 3.4 episodes per child per year. ⋯ Data showed that the ORT use rate was 50.7 per cent. Home available fluid was used by 14.4 per cent. ORT should be further promoted to control diarrheal diseases and health providers should give instructions to every mother or child minder on how to dispense ORS or electrolytes packets for appropriate dilution and use.

Enzyme immunoassay in the diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infections in diverse patient groups.
An enzyme immunoassay (EIA) in parallel with cell culture was used to investigate the extent of infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis. EIA reactive confirmed in cell culture was taken as positive. C. trachomatis was found in 6 (26.0%) of 23 men with symptomatic non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), ten (17.2%) of 58 symptom-free males and in three of 4 with postgonococcal urethritis. ⋯ Of 3 women with PID, 2 (66.7%) harboured C. trachomatis in their cervix while in another 29 infertile women, C. trachomatis was positive in 3 (8.1%). Contraceptives appeared to have an effect on the chlamydial positivity. Comparative testing of EIA with the standard cell culture method in this study indicate EIA as a suitable alternative for the definitive diagnosis of chlamydial infection in high prevalence settings and with caution in low prevalence settings.

Basal t-PA antigen concentration, PAI-I activity and fibrinolytic capacity was studied in plasma from 20 healthy teenager girls (age 15.9 +/- 1.3 years) and two groups of older healthy volunteers, consisting of 17 women (age 32 +/- 8 years, group 1) and 35 men (age 34 +/- 8 years, group 2). Basal t-PA antigen concentrations in plasma were found to be highly age-dependent with higher values with increasing age. The teenager girls had significantly lower values compared with the two groups of elderly volunteers. ⋯ The coagulation parameters, factor VIII activity, AT III, Protein C and platelet counts were all within reference values before and on OC. The fibrinolytic activity in plasma after venous occlusion (15 min) increased significantly when the teenagers had used OC for 4 months. This phenomenon was explained by significantly decreased PAI levels and also by significantly increased t-PA antigen release from the vessel wall after venous occlusion.
