Effects of different exercise modalities on lipid profile in the elderly population: A meta-analysis.
Dyslipidemia, characterized by elevated total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), as well as decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), has long been recognized as a major risk factor for age-related diseases. Recent studies have shown that exercise can be effective in mitigating dyslipidemia in older adults. The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the effects of different exercise modalities (aerobic exercise [AE], resistance exercise [RE], aerobic+resistance exercise [AE+RE], and high-intensity interval training) on lipid profile in the elderly population, in order to identify the most effective exercise modality for maintaining lipid profile health in older adults. ⋯ Our analysis indicates that AE is the most effective exercise modality for reducing dyslipidemia in older adults, compared to RE, AE+RE, and high-intensity interval training. These findings suggest that AE should be promoted as an important lifestyle intervention to improve lipid profile health in the elderly population. However, further research is needed to investigate the optimal duration, frequency, and intensity of AE required to achieve the most beneficial effects on lipid profile health in older adults.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a major public health problem threatening human health. It can lead to multiple system complications, among which liver damage is also a common complication of COVID-19. The pathogenesis of liver injury is complex and involves the interaction of multiple factors. This study aims to investigate the incidence and risk factors of liver injury in COVID-19 patients and analyze the impact of liver injury on clinical prognosis of patients, so as to provide corresponding basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment. ⋯ The incidence of liver injury in COVID-19 patients was high, affected by age, gender, chronic liver disease, inflammatory state and medication, and patients with liver injury were hospitalized longer and were more likely to have a poor prognosis. Therefore, clinical attention should be paid to early intervention.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant disease characterized by abnormal proliferation of plasma cells, which usually occurs in middle-aged and elderly male patients. Bisphosphonates (BP) are commonly used for the treatment of MM bone disease. Long-time use of BP may cause medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). MRONJ occurs in jaw exclusively, and Multiple myeloma can also invade the jaw. The 2 diseases have similar clinical manifestations and imaging findings. This report present a case of MM identified in surgical specimen at the site that had been previously pathologically diagnosed as MRONJ in a patient with MM. ⋯ These findings suggested MRONJ and MM could occur simultaneously at same site, so patients with MM presenting with symptoms of MRONJ should be screened for concurrent or disease relapse of multiple myeloma to prevent misdiagnosis or inadequate management. Meanwhile, this also suggests long-term inflammatory may lead to invasion of multiple myeloma.

This study investigated the clinical characteristics and risk factors of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients in designated hospitals (Port Hospital) in the Henan province. A total of 391 COVID-19 patients with complete case information from August 6, 2021 to February 26, 2022 were selected. Logistic regression was used to analyze the differences between the clinical types, ages, and sex of the patients. ⋯ Multivariate regression analysis for those > 50 years of age showed that underlying diseases (OR: 7.06, 95% CI: 2.79-17.89) and increased urea (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.47-2.48), total bilirubin (OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.08-1.21), total protein (OR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.00-1.17), and lactic dehydrogenase (OR: 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00-1.02) levels and decreased albumin (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.58-0.76) levels were characteristics of COVID-19. Multivariate regression analysis stratified by sex showed that the characteristics of COVID-19 patients were increased white blood cell count in males (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.55-0.78) as well as increased creatinine levels (OR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.87-0.91). This retrospective analysis provides useful information to support the clinical management of patients with COVID-19.

N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) has been studied as a diagnostic screening tool for Kawasaki disease (KD). However, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) has been less studied while has less variability among age groups. We aimed to find out if BNP can be used as a diagnostic screening tool for KD in Korea. ⋯ The AUC of KD and CAA were 0.884 and 0.726, respectively, which was the highest AUCs among all variables. Additionally, we proposed a scoring system for KD and CAA. It is important to clinically suspect KD and CAA in children with high BNP levels.
