Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a disabling neurodegenerative disease. The prognosis is poor, and currently there are no proven effective therapies. Most likely, the etiology is related to cerebral inflammatory processes that cause neuronal damage, resulting in dysfunction and apoptosis of nerve cells. ⋯ It is generally thought that this phase offers a window for efficacious treatment. Therefore, research is also focused on the identification of biomarkers for early AD detection. In this respect, the plasma measurement of neurofilament light chain in patients treated with hydromethylthionine mesylate may well open a new way to prevent the formation of tau tangles and represents the first treatment for AD at its roots.

Effectiveness of an Intervention to Improve Decision Making for Older Patients With Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease : A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Older patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) face difficult decisions about managing kidney failure, frequently experiencing decisional conflict, regret, and treatment misaligned with preferences. ⋯ Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).

Meta AnalysisEpstein Barr Virus Reactivation during COVID-19 Hospitalization Significantly Increased Mortality/Death in SARS-CoV-2(+)/EBV(+) than SARS-CoV-2(+)/EBV(-) Patients: A Comparative Meta-Analysis.
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation in acute-phase of COVID-19 disease was recently discovered but it is not clear in terms of degree of mortality caused, and this was the aim of the current study. Six databases and three non-databases were thoroughly searched, independently. The articles related to non-human study (abstract, in vitro, in vivo, in silico, case study, poster, and review articles) were excluded for main analysis. ⋯ This finding is equivalent to the absolute mortality effect of 130 more per 1000 COVID-19 patients (95% CI: 34-296). Furthermore, based on statistical analysis, D-dimer was not statistically significantly different (p > 0.05) between the groups although studies have shown that D-dimer was statistically significantly different (p < 0.05) between these groups. Based on the inclusion and analysis of low risk of bias and high quality of articles graded with Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS), when COVID-19 patients' health state is gradually worsening, EBV reactivation needs to be suspected because EBV reactivation is a possible marker for COVID-19 disease severity.

This review aims to describe the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a small to medium vessel necrotizing vasculitis, typically classified with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangitis (MPA) as antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). However, less than 50% of patients with EGPA have a positive ANCA test. ⋯ More severe disease frequently requires the use of aggressive therapy such as cyclophosphamide. Once treatment is initiated, patients can achieve good control of symptoms; unfortunately, disease relapses are common and prolonged treatment with corticosteroids is often necessary for asthma management. A better understanding of the disease heterogeneity is needed for the development of better therapies.

Osteoporosis patients with fragility fractures and vertebral deformities have impaired quality of life (QOL). The phase angle, an index calculated from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measurements, has been reported to be related to clinical outcomes, mortality, and QOL in various diseases. We aimed to investigate the relationship between the phase angle and QOL in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis. ⋯ The phase angle in postmenopausal osteoporotic patients was significantly related to QOL after adjusting for age, BMI, ASMI, and BMD. As the phase angle is a parameter that can be measured easily and noninvasively, it might be a useful aid for QOL assessment in osteoporotic patients.
