Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can reveal a range of degenerative findings and anatomical abnormalities; however, the clinical importance of these remains uncertain and controversial. We aimed to investigate if the presence of MRI findings identifies patients with low back pain (LBP) or sciatica who respond better to particular interventions. ⋯ Although individual trials suggested that some MRI findings might be effect modifiers for specific interventions, none of these interactions were investigated in more than a single trial. High quality, adequately powered trials investigating MRI findings as effect modifiers are essential to determine the clinical importance of MRI findings in LBP and sciatica (PROSPERO: CRD42013006571).

Low back pain (LBP) is a debilitating condition that is complex to manage. One reason is that clinicians lack means to identify early on patients who are likely to become high care utilizers. ⋯ The results suggest that it is feasible to develop a dynamic, primary care provider visit-based predictive model for LBP care based on longitudinal data obtained via electronic health records.

Effects of compression at myofascial trigger points in patients with acute low back pain: A randomized controlled trial.
Although there is some evidence that massage therapy, especially compression at myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), is effective for sub-acute and chronic low back pain, the effectiveness of massage therapy with compression at MTrPs for acute low back pain has not been studied. ⋯ These results indicate that compression at MTrPs is effective to treat acute low back pain compared with compression at non-MTrPs and superficial massage.
