This study aims to determine whether older adults reporting back pain (BP) are at increased risk of premature mortality, specifically, to examine the association with disabling/non-disabling pain separately. ⋯ This study confirmed previous findings regarding the relationship between pain and excess mortality. Further, we have shown that, among older adults, this association is specific to disabling pain and to women. Clinicians should be aware not only of the short-term implications of disabling BP but also the longer-term effects. Future research should attempt to understand the mechanisms underpinning this relationship to avoid excess mortality and should aim to determine why the relationship differs in men and women.

To discuss the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM)'s Top Five Recommendations in the Choosing Wisely campaign educating physicians and patients on high quality electrodiagnostic and neuromuscular medicine. The AANEM published its Top Five Recommendations in February 2015 in collaboration with the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation and Consumer Reports. ⋯ Recommendation 1: Don't do a needle electromyography (EMG) test for isolated neck or back pain after a motor vehicle accident, as a needle EMG is unlikely to be helpful. Recommendation 2: Don't perform dermatomal somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) for a pinched nerve in the neck or back, as they are an unproven diagnostic procedure. Recommendation 3: Don't do a four limb needle EMG/nerve conduction study (NCS) testing for neck and back pain after trauma. Recommendation 4: Don't do nerve conduction studies without also doing a needle EMG for testing for radiculopathy, a pinched nerve in the neck or back.Recommendation 5: Don't do a magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) scan of the spine or brain for patients with only peripheral neuropathy (without signs or symptoms suggesting a brain or spine disorder).

Retrospective lumbar fusion outcomes measured by ODI sub-functions of 100 consecutive procedures.
Low back pain has been quite prevalent in the general population. Chronic low back pain can be defined as back pain lasting for more than 12 weeks. For chronic symptoms, fusion surgeries are the most common surgeries to alleviate the pain. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) is a measurement for subjective characteristics or attitudes that can be difficult to be directly measured. Respondents specify their level of agreement to a statement by indicating a position along a continuous line between two end points. ⋯ Successful outcomes were demonstrated for each of the categories assessed and no statistical differences were seen in the ODI % for any comparison after 5 years on 19% of data reported which may have limited forecast reliability. Our data suggest that post-operative outcome is independent of preoperative condition, procedure to be preformed, age, and BMI. Our data support the continual practice of spinal fusion for the treatment of degenerative disk disease.
