The purpose of this study was to determine whether pain location indicated in pain drawings was related to the specific lumbar disc level(s) that was abnormal in appearance and painful upon discographic injection. ⋯ The results of this study indicate that pain drawings may be helpful in identifying which specific discs are associated with pain complaints. As with any evaluation, the drawings should be considered in combination with findings from other assessments.

Comparative Study[Validation of the North American Spine Society Instrument for assessment of health status in patients with chronic backache].
Pain and functional limitations are the chief symptoms in patients with back pain. However, standardized assessment of these domains are still not commonplace in clinical practice. The objective of this study was the cultural adaptation and validation of the North American Spine Society (NASS) Lumbar Spine Outcome Assessment Instrument for German speaking patients with back pain. ⋯ The German version of the NASS Cervical and Lumbar Spine Outcome Assessment Instrument allows the standardized assessment of pain, functional limitations and neurogenic symptoms in patients with back pain and the international comparison of health states and therapeutic outcomes.

To evaluate the efficacy of foraminal steroid injections performed under CT guidance for the management of radicular pain. ⋯ We consider that CT-guided periganglionic steroid injections should be an integral part of the management strategy for radicular pain resistant to medical treatment.

Back pain is a common disease causing tremendous costs for treatment, work loss and pension payments. The reasons of back pain vary considerably and often remain doubtful. ⋯ Active treatment procedures should be preferred. In chronic pain patients only multimodal concepts of treatment seem to be successful as far as they take care of somatic, psychosocial, ergonomic and sport physiological aspects.
