Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Continuous spinal analgesia or opioid-added continuous epidural analgesia for postoperative pain control after hip replacement.
Continuous spinal anaesthesia and continuous epidural anaesthesia are both able to provide adequate postoperative pain relief. Combining local anaesthetics and opioids results in synergistic effects. The purpose of this randomized, prospective study was to compare quality of analgesia, side-effects and patient's satisfaction between spinal bupivacaine alone and epidural bupivacaine with sufentanil postoperatively. ⋯ Continuous spinal analgesia with bupivacaine alone and continuous epidural analgesia with bupivacaine/sufentanil are both effective for postoperative pain relief after hip replacement. Those patients in the epidural group reported better analgesia but had a higher rate of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Efficacy of pain therapy did not correlate with patient satisfaction.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialSteroid therapy for post-tonsillectomy symptoms in adults: a randomized, placebo-controlled study.
Post-operative morbidity following tonsillectomy remains an important clinical problem despite advances in anesthetic and surgical techniques. This study investigated the effect of a one-day course of intravenous dexamethasone on recovery from tonsillectomy. ⋯ Application of 3 doses of dexamethasone within 24 hours during and after tonsillectomy is advisable because of the reduction of postoperative morbidity, especially pain and edema.

Effectiveness of lubrication of endotracheal tube cuff with chamomile-extract for prevention of postoperative sore throat and hoarseness.
To determine the efficacy of lubrication of the endotracheal tube cuff with Chamomile extract (Kamillosan M) before intubation on postoperative sore throat and hoarseness. ⋯ Lubrication of endotracheal tube cuff with Chamomile extract spray before intubation can not prevent post operative sore throat and hoarseness.

The utility and validity of the modified brief pain inventory in a multiple-dose postoperative analgesic trial.
Patients undergoing major surgery often require several days of postoperative analgesia. However, few data exist on the longitudinal course of postoperative pain and the psychometric properties of pain assessment tools used in this setting. Our objective was to validate use of the modified Brief Pain Inventory through reanalysis of pain data from a multiple-dose, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of analgesia after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. ⋯ The modified Brief Pain Inventory was stable and valid over the assessment period, suggesting that it can be used during the subacute postoperative period to assess postoperative pain among patients with coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Comparative Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical Trial[Effectiveness of interscalene plexus block for open subacromion decompression].
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of interscalene brachial plexus blocks on the functional outcome, subjective pain appraisal and patient satisfaction after open shoulder surgery. These results were compared with patients treated by conventional analgesic measures. ⋯ By implementing ISB sufficient analgesia in the early postoperative period after open shoulder surgery is attained, allowing for early physiotherapy. This positively influences convalescence and the outcome of the surgical procedure. Furthermore, patients are visibly more satisfied with the postoperative pain management.
