Gamma Knife central lateral thalamotomy for the treatment of neuropathic pain.
The goal of this study was to assess the safety and efficacy of stereotactic central lateral thalamotomy with Gamma Knife radiosurgery in patients with neuropathic pain. ⋯ Safe, nonpharmacological therapies are imperative for the management of refectory chronic pain conditions. The present series demonstrates that Gamma Knife central lateral thalamotomy is safe and potentially effective in the long term for relieving chronic neuropathic pain refractory to pharmacotherapy and for restoring quality of life.

To evaluate how ocular, oral, and bodily neuropathic pain symptoms, which characterize small fiber neuropathies, are associated with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) classification based on the American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism (ACR/EULAR) criteria. ⋯ We found that those classified as SS had lower scores/reports of painful neuropathies compared with those classified as non-SS. Non-SS patients with dry eye disease or symptoms could benefit from pain assessment as they may experience painful small-fiber neuropathies (SFNs). Pain questionnaires may help identify pain associated with SFNs in patients with SS and non-SS dry eye. Future studies would be helpful to correlate self-reports of pain to objective measures of SFNs in those with SS, non-SS dry eye, and healthy controls.

Although cases of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) induced by brainstem infarct have been reported, the neurosurgical literature lacks a comprehensive review for this subpopulation of patients. We present the first systematic review of the literature to discuss pathology, surgical management, and future directions for therapeutic innovation in this population. ⋯ Brainstem infarcts affecting the trigeminal pathway represent an understudied pathologic cause of TN. Although the neurosurgical literature lacks a clear picture of the most efficacious interventions in this population, we are optimistic that this review will encourage further investigation into the best treatment for these patients.

Impact of neuropathic pain on quality of life in adults with sickle cell disease: observational study.
Knowledge on the characteristics of neuropathic pain in people with sickle cell disease (SCD) may help to provide more effective treatment procedures. ⋯ Neuropathic pain was more frequent than nociceptive pain in adults with SCD and generated worse scores in all domains of quality of life. Anxiety and depression were present in patients with both types of pain.
