In the assessment and treatment of chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients, the biopsychosocial model is used worldwide. Psychological distress has been reported to have a strong relationship with disability as measured with several instruments. The relationship between psychosocial distress measured with the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) and self-reported disability measured with the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) has not been investigated. ⋯ The relationship between psychosocial distress measured with the SCL-90-R and self-reported disability measured with the RMDQ in CLBP patients is weak.

Older patients are often advised that their age is a contraindication to lumbar fusion surgery. There is, however, limited available data to support or contradict this assertion. Although prior studies of surgical treatment for lumbar degenerative disease suggest that older patients obtain symptomatic pain relief, an evaluation of fusion outcomes based on modern Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) measures is lacking. ⋯ The results of this study support the efficacy of lumbar decompression and fusion in selected patients over 65 years of age. Occurrence of a perioperative complication did not adversely affect clinical outcome. Patients undergoing a revision procedure should be counseled with regard to the more limited benefits seen with revision surgery.

[Observation on the transient analgesic effect of abdominal acupuncture TENS on pain of neck, shoulder, loin and legs].
To observe on the transient analgesic effect of abdominal points transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) combined with abdominal acupuncture according to the holographic theory on pain of neck, shoulder, loin and legs. ⋯ Abdominal acupuncture TENS has a better transient analgesic effect and can use less stimulation points to increase the analgesic effect.

Positional lumbar imaging using a positional device in a horizontally open-configuration MR unit - initial experience.
To evaluate whether positional MR images of the lumbar spine, obtained with a horizontally open-configuration MR unit, demonstrate positional changes of the dural sac, and to assess whether there are significant differences in positional changes between healthy volunteers and patients with chronic low back pain. ⋯ Using a horizontally open-configuration MR unit, positional MR imaging provided position-dependent change of the dural sac. Positional changes at the site of the degenerated disks may be different in patients with and without chronic low back pain.

Contemporary guidelines for the management of low back pain often consider patient involvement and responsibility an essential component; however, there has been little exploration of patients' opinions about back pain and its management. ⋯ In this group of participants with a history of back pain and physiotherapy treatment a common finding was a degree of acceptance of the back pain problem and the belief that patient involvement in management was essential. These findings would suggest that many patients with back pain may respond positively to the message of self-management. However, acceptance of this message was not automatic, but generally occurred gradually in line with patients' experience of back pain and treatment.
