Patient education booklet to support evidence-based low back pain care in primary care - a cluster randomized controlled trial.
Inappropriate imaging and low-value care for low back pain (LBP) are common. A new patient-education booklet was created to overcome identified barriers to the delivery of recommended care, including the use of inappropriate imaging. Our aim was to assess the effectiveness of this booklet as part of primary care for LBP patients in comparison to usual care. ⋯ The booklet appeared to be effective in reducing the proportion of LBP patients who underwent imaging examinations over 12 months. The intervention had no discernible effect on the PROMIS PF20 T-score change. The number of sick leave days was substantially lower in the intervention group.

Physiotherapy informed by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (PACT) is a novel intervention that is related to improved disability and functioning in people with chronic lowback pain. This study explored physiotherapists experiences over time of the PACT training programme and intervention delivery. ⋯ PACT training and delivery were acceptable to physiotherapists. Existing skills were developed and additional, applicable approaches were provided that addressed psychosocial and behavioural aspects of chronic low back pain.

A cross-sectional study. ⋯ The prevalence of LBP among young sports players was different for age, sex, and sport discipline. Further studies are needed to clarify the association of sport-specific movements to LBP in each sport discipline. This may assist in developing programs or strategies for preventing LBP among young sports players.Level of Evidence: 3.

The technique of radiofrequency neurotomy (RFN) of the facet joints has been used for decades to treat persistent low back pain to good effect in carefully selected patients. Traditionally, the target is the medial branches of the dorsal root supplying the facet joint. An alternative denervation target is the facet joint capsule. Capsule-targeting techniques may spare the multifidus muscle, a possible unintended target of traditional RFN that is thought to be important in recovering from low back pain, and have shown promising results. ⋯ Multifidus-sparing RFN represents an intriguing technique to denervate the facet joint pain generator while maintaining normal multifidus function. Further study is warranted, particularly in order to identify the appropriate patient criteria and long-term outcomes.
