Low back pain is a common musculoskeletal condition with substantial individual and societal costs. Standardized self-report questionnaires are commonly used in clinical practice to identify prognostic risk factors and tailor interventions for low back pain. However, most of these low back pain questionnaires have been developed in Western cultures and may not be clinically applicable to other cultures. These cultural aspects have not been explored. This study aimed to investigate the cultural assumptions underlying back pain questionnaires and the potential implications of using standardized questionnaires with non-Western populations. ⋯ Findings suggest that questionnaires could potentially negatively affect the patient-clinician rapport and lead to inaccurate and unanticipated results when used with culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Findings are also likely to be applicable to people with low back pain more broadly, regardless of culture. Implications include a need for cultural sensitivity when using questionnaires, greater consideration of when to use these measures, and adaptations to the use/design of standardized questionnaires.

T12 Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation to Treat Chronic Low Back Pain: A Case Series.
Dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRG-S) is a neuromodulation technique for treating neuropathic pain syndromes. Research has demonstrated DRG-S to be more effective than conventional SCS in treating RSD/CRPS, particularly of the lower extremities. Results from recent case series and prospective studies suggest that DRG-S may be effective in treatment of pain syndromes considered to have non-neuropathic components and characteristics (e.g. nociceptive). There have been multiple, small studies demonstrating efficacy of DRG-S for axial low back pain. There has, however, been no consensus regarding the best location for DRG lead placement in the treatment of low back pain. ⋯ T12 DRG-S can be an effective treatment for chronic axial low back pain. Stimulation results in reduced pain and disability, while improving quality of life. These outcomes can be achieved without paresthesias.

Domains of chronic low back pain and assessing treatment effectiveness: A clinical perspective.
Nonspecific chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common clinical condition that has impacts at both the individual and societal level. Pain intensity is a primary outcome used in clinical practice to quantify the severity of CLBP and the efficacy of its treatment; however, pain is a subjective experience that is impacted by a multitude of factors. Moreover, differences in effect sizes for pain intensity are not observed between common conservative treatments, such as spinal manipulative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, acupuncture, and exercise training. ⋯ In addition to pain intensity, we recommend that clinicians should consider assessing the multidimensional nature of CLBP by including physical (disability, muscular strength and endurance, performance in activities of daily living, and body composition), psychological (kinesiophobia, fear-avoidance, pain catastrophizing, pain self-efficacy, depression, anxiety, and sleep quality), social (social functioning and work absenteeism), and health-related quality-of-life measures, depending on what is deemed relevant for each individual. This review also provides practical recommendations to clinicians for the assessment of outcomes beyond pain intensity, including information on how large a change must be for it to be considered "real" in an individual patient. This information can guide treatment selection when working with an individual with CLBP.

To investigate the current evidence to determine if there is an association between chiropractic use and opioid receipt. ⋯ This review demonstrated an inverse association between chiropractic use and opioid receipt among patients with spinal pain. Further research is warranted to assess this association and the implications it may have for case management strategies to decrease opioid use.

The objective of the review is to determine whether conditioned pain modulation (CPM) is impaired in adults with chronic low back pain (CLBP) when compared with pain-free individuals. ⋯ High-quality research is strongly recommended to determine the function of endogenous pain modulatory mechanisms in CLBP.
