Randomized Controlled TrialEffects and underlying mechanisms of unstable shoes on chronic low back pain: a randomized controlled trial.
To investigate the effects that wearing unstable shoes has on disability, trunk muscle activity, and lumbar spine range of motion (ROM) in patients with chronic lower back pain (CLBP). ⋯ This study shows that the use of unstable shoes contributes to improvements in disability, which are likely related to increased trunk muscle activity and lumbar spine ROM.

Observational StudyPrevalence of vitamin D deficiency in chronic and subacute low back pain patients in India: a triple-arm controlled study.
Vitamin D is vital for musculoskeletal health and may be associated with subacute and chronic low back pain. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among chronic low back pain (CLBP) and subacute low back pain (SLBP), and compare the same with healthy controls. This study was designed as triple-arm case-control study comprising of CLBP, SLBP, and controls. ⋯ Thus, the severe forms of vitamin D deficiency may be causally associated with CLBP and SLBP. The results of the present study revealed that increasing severity of vitamin D deficiency may have a pathogenetic association with chronic low back pain and subacute low back pain. These results may prove to be of significance in framing of future management guidelines for the above clinical conditions.

Workers with low back pain (LBP) may benefit from wearing a lumbar belt (LB), but the biomechanical and psychological mechanisms involved are not fully understood. Two types of flexible LB (extensible and non-extensible) were compared to a control condition (no LB) regarding pain-related (pain, fear of pain and catastrophizing) and biomechanical (range of motion - ROM) outcomes related to two tasks: maximal trunk flexion-extension and manual material handling. Healthy controls and participants with LBP were tested. ⋯ This was observed even at the beginning of the trunk flexion movement, allowing generalization to many work tasks, that is to say tasks performed with small or deep trunk flexion. The two LBs reduced pain, fear of pain and catastrophizing in subjects with LBP. That may help a gradual re-exposure to physical work activities (disability prevention perspective), or maintaining these activities (secondary prevention perspective), following a LBP episode.

Optimal placement of electrodes is important for spinal cord stimulation. Factors affecting the difficulty of percutaneous electrode placement are not well known. In this study, we retrospectively evaluated the factors affecting the difficulty of percutaneous electrode placement. ⋯ This is the first study to evaluate factors affecting the difficulty of percutaneous electrode placement. A history of percutaneous cylindrical electrode placement did not affect the success of current placement, although it lengthened the operation time.
