New empirical evidence of the validity of the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire: the differential influence of activity engagement and pain willingness on adjustment to chronic pain.
The aims of this study were to examine the internal structure of the Spanish version of the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire and present new empirical evidence regarding its validity. ⋯ These findings indicate the differential influence of both components on adjustment to chronic pain.

This article is a report of a Norwegian-revised study on the effectiveness of a follow-up multidisciplinary management programme for chronic pain to investigate the change processes associated with treatment. ⋯ These results are consistent with the ultimate goal of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches, which is to help patients with chronic pain to cope more effectively and to improve their health-related quality of life and functioning. To maintain treatment improvements and advance nursing, there is a clear need for research that tests the efficacy of follow-up interventions that are designed to prevent drop out and relapse.

SUMMARY Spinal cord stimulation has been in clinical use for the treatment of chronic pain for over four decades. Since the initial use by Norman Shealy, the indications for its use have increased steadily over the decades to include neuropathic pain owing to failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome and painful diabetic peripheral neuropathies. To date, the precise mechanism of action of spinal cord stimulation remains unclear, yet it is still one of the most expensive interventional treatment modalities available in pain medicine with increasing application across the world. ⋯ Systems-based process analysis is not widely utilized in pain medicine, and there is a limited body of evidence for its application. The purpose of this article is to generate interest in the discipline of process analysis in pain medicine, as it has found value in other healthcare settings and industries. We mention the applicability across countries and specialties that we hope will increase the awareness of this concept and possibly generate interest in further examination by investigators that will lead to the development of highly efficient and effective healthcare delivery processes and systems across the globe.

How frequently are contraindicated or warned against combinations of drugs prescribed to patients receiving long-term opioid therapy for chronic pain?
To analyse the proportion of patients treated with an opioid for chronic pain who were prescribed concomitant medications that are warned against or contraindicated in the German summary of product characteristics to determine if warnings on drug-drug interactions (DDIs) are observed. ⋯ Many patients that received an opioid for chronic pain were prescribed concomitant medications with the potential for safety-related DDIs or interactions that would alter the effectiveness of the opioid.

The epidemiology of chronic pain is poorly understood due to a paucity of longitudinal studies limiting the ability to develop prevention strategies for a condition resistant to many current therapies. ⋯ Women had a higher prevalence - but not incidence - of chronic pain compared with men, indicative of longer duration of illness in women. Risk factors also differed according to sex, supporting current literature reporting potentially different mechanisms for men and women. A better understanding of risk factors is necessary to develop population-based preventive interventions. The former can only be achieved with population-based, longitudinal studies.
