The Weight of Pain: What Does a 10 on the Pain Scale Mean? An Innovative Use of Art in Medical Education to Enhance Pain Management.
Art and museum spaces offer a novel educational platform for exploring the subjective elements inherent to the understanding and treatment of pain. Physicians and museum educators collaborated on an educational model using art to explore the metacognitive dimensions of pain management. ⋯ Facilitated, reflective experiences with works of art have the capacity to challenge clinicians to become aware of their implicit biases, thought processes, and communication with potential importance for improving pain management and providing more compassionate care.

To support implementation of effective treatments for back pain that can be delivered to a range of people, we summarize learnings from our process evaluation of the MATCH trial's implementation of an adaptation of the STarT Back risk-stratified care model. ⋯ These insights provide guidance for future efforts to adapt and implement the STarT Back strategy and other complex practice change interventions. They emphasize the need for primary care-based interventions to minimize complexity and the need for ongoing monitoring and feedback.

The goal of this study was to identify a limited set of pain indicators that were most predicive of physical pain. We began with 140 items culled from existing pain observation tools and used a modified Delphi approach followed by statistical analyses to reduce the item pool. ⋯ We used two complementary approaches-expert opinion and statistical analysis-to reduce a large pool of behavioral indicators to a parsimonious set of items to predict pain intensity in persons with dementia. Future studies are needed to examine the psychometric properties of this scale, which is called the Pain Intensity Measure for Persons with Dementia.

Exploring Lived Experiences of Chronic Pain Through Photo-Elicitation and Social Networking.
To understand how patients' use of photo-elicitation and online social networks (Facebook) enhances their understanding of what it means to live with pain. ⋯ Photo-elicitation is an innovative way to shed light on patients' lived experience with chronic pain. Despite some technical challenges, Facebook support groups utilizing photo-elicitation can provide a readily available platform that can facilitate interchange of patient experiences and might help patients communicate with their providers.
