Observational StudyPain catastrophizing: rumination is a discriminating factor among individuals with different pain characteristic.
The objective of this study was to compare the scores of the Helplessness, Magnification, Rumination, and Catastrophizing factors of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) between samples with different pain characteristics. The psychometric properties of the PCS were evaluated in 1,151 Brazilian adults (78.9% female; 38.6 (SD = 10.8) years): 335 had no pain, 390 had been in pain for less than 3 months, 250 had been in recurring pain for more than 3 months, and 176 had been in continuous pain for more than 3 months. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to verify the fit of the PCS models. ⋯ The PCS showed valid, reliable, and invariant results for the sample of Brazilian adults in no pain or with different pain conditions. The PCS adequately discriminated individuals in pain from those without pain. Among those in pain, Rumination was the only discriminating factor.

Knowledge of nursing staff at a pediatric referral hospital regarding the assessment and management of pain in children.
Pain is a frequent reason for consultation. Poor vocational training is referred to as a critical component for proper treatment. The objective of this study was to describe the knowledge and practices of the nursing staff of the Pediatric Hospital, Pereira Rossell Hospital Center, regarding the assessment and approach of pain in children. ⋯ The surveys demonstrated acceptable knowledge about pain assessment and management. However, aspects to improve in the knowledge of scales of evaluation in special populations, lack of familiarity with the use of opioids and conceptions of subjective evaluation of pain were objectified.

Self-reported disability and pain intensity are commonly used outcomes in patients with cervicogenic headaches. However, there is a paucity of psychometric evidence to support the use of these self-report outcomes for individuals treated with cervicogenic headaches. Therefore, it is unknown if these measures are reliable, responsive, or result in meaningful clinically important changes in this patient population. ⋯ Both instruments seem well suited as short-term self-report measures for patients with cervicogenic headaches. Clinicians and researchers should expect at least a 2.5-point reduction on the numeric pain rating scale and a 5.5-point reduction on the neck disability index after 4 weeks of intervention to be considered clinically meaningful.

Accurate assessment of pain in young children is challenging. An Emotion Application Programing Interface (API) can analyze and report 8 emotions from facial images. Each emotion ranges between 0 (no correlation) to 1 (greatest correlation). We evaluated correlation between the Emotion API with the FLACC scale (face, lets, activity, cry, and consolability) among children younger than 6 years old during blood sampling. ⋯ During a blood test procedure, young children show higher SADNESS and lower NEUTRAL emotions as reported by the Emotion API. This software program may be useful in reporting emotions related to pain in young children, and more research is needed to compare its validity, reliability and real-time application compared to the FLACC scale.

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is usually quantified using the visual analog scale (VAS). However, the VAS is a subjective measure and prone to reporting bias, therefore making it difficult to differentiate patients with true pain from those seeking to obtain secondary gain. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using plasma β-endorphin as an objective biomarker for CLBP. ⋯ A change in plasma β-endorphin level may be a surrogate marker of the treatment response for patients with CLBP. Advancements in β-endorphin measurements may help us better quantify pain intensity.
