Physical Activity Levels Predict Exercise-induced Hypoalgesia in Older Adults.
Prior research indicates that older adults exhibit a deficient capacity to activate multiple pain inhibitory mechanisms, including pain inhibition after acute exercise termed exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH). The influence of physical activity levels and psychological processes on EIH in older adults remains unclear.

The German version of the musculoskeletal pain intensity and interference questionnaire for musicians (MPIIQM-G): Translation and validation in professional orchestral musicians.
Many musicians suffer from playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) however many of the epidemiological surveys on PRMD do not utilize evaluated self-report instruments, especially as a tool to assess musculoskeletal pain intensity and pain interference in terms of function and psychosocial constructs. The aim of this study was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM) into German, and validate it among a population of professional orchestral musicians. The translated and cross-culturally adapted German version of the questionnaire was sent to a total of 367 professional orchestral musicians in Germany who were eligible for the study. ⋯ The subscales of MPIIQM showed strong correlation with the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) and the shorter version of Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDash) and low correlation with the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). These results were as expected, confirming the good construct validity of the MPIIQM. The German Version of the MPIIQM (MPIIQM-G) and the original version have similarly high qualities and thus the MPIIQM-G represents a useful self-report instrument for the measurement and evaluation of musculoskeletal pain intensity and pain interference for professional orchestral musicians.

Revisiting the Pain Resource Nurse Role in Sustaining Evidence-Based Practice Changes for Pain Assessment and Management.
Effective pain management is unlikely to occur without consistent and timely assessments. To improve assessment and management of pain, ward-based pain resource nurses were introduced in 2007 to facilitate hospital-wide evidence-based practice changes using three key targets. One-year post implementation of this quality improvement project, promising results were revealed. ⋯ Implementing and sustaining evidence-based practice change in clinical practice is challenging. Ongoing evaluation is necessary for identifying the long-term implications of practice improvement interventions and issues that influence the adoption of evidence-based practice. Strategies to address barriers, and to increase awareness and engagement of the pain resource nurse role with wider collaboration require further investigation.

The Impact of Tobacco Cigarette Smoking on Spinal Cord Stimulation Effectiveness in Chronic Spine-Related Pain Patients.
Despite the observation that select nicotine receptor agonists have analgesic effects, smokers report higher pain scores and more functional impairments than lifelong nonsmokers, attributable to exaggerated stress responses, receptor desensitization, and altered pharmacokinetics compounded by accelerated structural damage resulting from impaired bone healing, osteoporosis, and advancement of disk disease. We hypothesized that smoking diminishes the analgesic response to spinal cord stimulation (SCS) in patients with chronic spine-related pain conditions. ⋯ Among our SCS-implanted sample, a positive correlation was observed between tobacco use and degree of pain reduction as early as 12 months postimplant; this was evident by the reported higher pain scores and opioid use in current smokers in comparison with former smokers and lifelong nonsmokers.
