We aim to assess the validity and reliability of the Musculoskeletal Pain Intensity and Interference Questionnaire for Musicians (MPIIQM) and to add to its cross-cultural adaptation process by translating, culturally adapting, and validating the MPIIQM into European Portuguese language in the population of Portuguese musicians. ⋯ MPIIQM-Pt is the first validated questionnaire to evaluate pain among Portuguese musicians. It showed excellent psychometric properties, both in terms of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, factor analysis, and construct validity. Therefore, it is a valid and reliable tool suitable for both research and clinical practice purposes. MPIIQM-Pt will allow the development of more robust studies on pain among musicians and the improved assessment and monitoring of pain in this population, filling an important gap in this field of Pain Medicine.

Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs) have been suggested for use in measuring treatment effectiveness. To minimize patient burden, two approaches have been proposed: An orthopedic-specific Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE) or computer adaptive testing methods such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS). The goal of this work was to examine the constructs measured by the SANE and PROMIS system in a military orthopedic population undergoing knee surgery. ⋯ In a knee surgical population, the SANE, PROMIS Physical Function, and PROMIS Pain Interference measure the same human dimension of physical capability; however, PROMIS Physical Function and Pain Interference may measure this construct more effectively in isolation. The SANE may be a more viable option to gauge physical capability when computer adaptive testing is not possible.

Rheumatic diseases (RD) are chronic diseases that significantly affect the lives of patients. Assessing health outcomes through a patient-reported outcome measurement information system (PROMIS) is essential for RD management. Moreover, these tend to be less favorable among individuals than among the rest of the population. ⋯ Moreover, RD individuals reported lower physical functioning (β = -5.4; 95% CI = -6.50, -4.24) and social interaction (β = -4.5; 95% CI = -5.73, -3.20). Patients with RD in Saudi Arabia, particularly those with systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, have significantly greater impairment in physical functioning and social interaction and report higher levels of fatigue and pain. Addressing and ameliorating these negative outcomes is necessary to improve quality of life.

ReviewScoping review of early pain-related outcome domains and measurement instruments after degenerative lumbar spine surgery.
Optimization of perioperative pain interventions in lumbar spine surgery could reduce the incidence of acute and persistent postoperative pain and opioid consumption. Standardization in early outcome measurement provides a solid foundation for future clinical and research practices and should be integrated in core outcome sets for long-term treatment outcome evaluations. This scoping review provides an overview of outcomes used when evaluating early perioperative pain interventions after lumbar spine surgery. ⋯ This review portrays an extensive overview of outcome measurements used in perioperative pain management in lumbar spine surgery. A lack of consensus on the set of indicators exists. This scoping review is a call for action to create consensus on how to evaluate perioperative pain interventions in degenerative lumbar spine surgery.

Measuring pain intensity in patients unable to communicate is a challenge on general wards. Observation-based pain scoring tools have been used for patients with dementia or in critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) patients. However, there is no established or validated assessment tool for non-ICU patients without dementia related cognitive deficiencies who cannot communicate. The "Behavioural Pain Scale Non-Intubated" (BPS-NI) and the "Pain Assessment In Advanced Dementia-German" (PAINAD-G) are potential tools to fill this gap. ⋯ Measuring the pain intensity in patients unable to communicate is a common challenge on general wards. This study assessed reliability and applicability BPS-NI and the PAINAD-G in a general ward setting. Furthermore, it provides cut-off values in order to estimate pain intensity and support analgesic response.
