Virtual reality hypnosis (VRH) has emerged as a new and promising option for pain management. Nonetheless, neural dynamics of pain modulation during VRH have not been investigated yet. The aim of this study was to measure the effects of VRH on pain, combining neurophysiological and self-reported measurements. ⋯ VRH decreases experimental pain perception, increases subject level of dissociation and modulates cerebral pain processing mechanisms. Pain can be managed with analgesic medication but also through complementary interventions. Among these, hypnosis and virtual reality (VR) are known to reduce pain for patients and healthy individuals. In recent years, an innovative technique combining hypnosis and VR has been proposed to help patients in managing pain. However, to our knowledge, no study has focused on the underlying mechanisms of this VR/hypnosis combination. We showed that VR combined with hypnosis decreases experimental pain, increases dissociation and influences EEG modulation.

Randomized Controlled TrialClinical and electrophysiological efficacy of extracorporeal shock-wave therapy in carpal tunnel syndrome: a placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy on pain, functionality, and electrophysiological measurements in carpal tunnel syndrome. ⋯ This study shows that radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy has positive effects on pain, functionality, and electrophysiological measurements for mild-to-moderate carpal tunnel syndrome 1 month after application.

A prospective study. ⋯ The SC-LSIQ features good internal consistency, reliability, and validity for evaluating Chinese patients with LBP. Results suggest that the SC-LSIQ can be appropriately applied to patients with LBP in routine clinical practice.

Bipolar radiofrequency ablation of the superomedial (SM), superolateral (SL) and inferomedial (IM) genicular nerves for chronic osteoarthritis knee pain: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial with 12-month follow-up.
Variability in anatomy in the knees supports the use of aggressive lesioning techniques such as bipolar-radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to treat knee osteoarthritis (KOA). There are no randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of bipolar-RFA. ⋯ Our failure to find efficacy for genicular nerve RFA, coupled with evidence showing that a plenitude of nerves supply the knee joint and preliminary studies indicating superiority of lesioning strategies targeting more than three nerves, suggest controlled trials using more aggressive lesioning strategies are warranted.

ReviewAre Factors of Posture and Balance Integrated in Research Studies on Upper Extremity Musculoskeletal Pain in Instrumental Musicians?: A Scoping Review.
It is widely believed that posture and balance stressors are factors in playing-related pain for musicians using hand-held musical instruments. This purpose of this scoping review was to assess the available literature relative to the effects of posture and balance in musicians with neuromusculoskeletal injuries. A search of Medline, Web of Science, and SportDiscus seeking articles combining posture and balance considerations with pain in performing artists was performed. ⋯ Although, in recent years, there has been an increase in the number of interventional studies regarding posture, balance and pain in musicians, there is still minimal evidence about the contribution of posture and balance characteristics to pain in musician performers. To reliably establish a predictable relationship with injury symptomatology experienced by musicians, it is essential to integrate standardized, validated measurements of posture and balance in the evaluation of all musicians who report to a health professional with neuromusculoskeletal pain. This will not only allow researchers to determine the effect of postural righting dysfunction on neuromusculoskeletal injuries in musicians, but also may provide a foundation for clinicians to develop effective interventions.
