The aims of this study were to (1) evaluate the time between onset of occipital neuralgia symptoms and nerve decompression surgery, (2) perform a cost comparison analysis between surgical and nonsurgical treatment of occipital neuralgia, and (3) report postoperative results of nerve decompression for occipital neuralgia. ⋯ This study demonstrates that patients suffer from occipital neuralgia for an average of 19 years before undergoing surgery. Nerve decompression reduces symptom severity significantly and should be considered earlier in the treatment course of occipital neuralgia that is refractory to conservative treatment to prevent patient morbidity and decrease direct and indirect health care costs.

Chronic postsurgical pain: A European survey.
Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) is a clinical problem, and large prospective studies are needed to determine its incidence, characteristics, and risk factors. ⋯ Unfortunately, our findings do not offer a new CPSP predictive score. However, we present reliable new data on the incidence, characteristics, and consequences of CPSP from a large European survey. Interesting new data on the time course of CPSP, its neuropathic pain component, and CPSP after endometriosis surgery generate new hypotheses but need to be confirmed by further research.

ReviewRecent Advances in Management of Neuropathic, Nociceptive, and Chronic Pain: A Narrative Review with Focus on Nanomedicine, Gene Therapy, Stem Cell Therapy, and Newer Therapeutic Options.
This manuscript summarizes novel clinical and interventional approaches in the management of chronic, nociceptive, and neuropathic pain. ⋯ Pain can be defined as a feeling of physical or emotional distress caused by an external stimulus. Pain can be grouped into distinct types according to characteristics including neuropathic pain, which is a pain caused by disease or lesion in the sensory nervous system; nociceptive pain, which is pain that can be sharp, aching, or throbbing and is caused by injury to bodily tissues; and chronic pain, which is long lasting or persisting beyond 6 months. With improved understanding of different signaling systems for pain in recent years, there has been an upscale of methods of analgesia to counteract these pathological processes. Novel treatment methods such as use of cannabinoids, stem cells, gene therapy, nanoparticles, monoclonal antibodies, and platelet-rich plasma have played a significant role in improved strategies for therapeutic interventions. Although many management options appear to be promising, extensive additional clinical research is warranted to determine best practice strategies in the future for clinicians.

The aim of this study was to address the limited understanding of neuropathic pain (NP) among burn survivors by comprehensively examining its prevalence and related factors on a national scale using the Burn Model System (BMS) National Database. ⋯ This study highlights the significant prevalence of NP in burn patients and its adverse impacts on their physical, psychological, and social well-being. The findings underscore the necessity of a comprehensive approach to NP treatment, addressing both physical symptoms and psychosocial factors.

The Positive Correlation between Motor Function and Neuropathic Pain-like behaviors after Spinal Cord Injury: A Longitudinal Study of Mice.
Abstract With the recovery of motor function, some spinal cord injury (SCI) patients still suffer from severe pain-like behaviors symptoms. Whether motor function correlates with neuropathic pain-like behaviors remain unclear. In this study, a longitudinal cohort study of mice with moderate thoracic 10 contusion was performed to explore the characteristics of neuropathic pain-like behaviors and its correlation with motor function in different sexes. ⋯ Importantly, motor function recovery was positively associated with the outcomes of neuropathic pain-like behaviors after SCI, which was more obvious in female mice. Our data not only revealed the characteristics of neuropathic pain-like behaviors but also clarified the correlations between motor function recovery and neuropathic pain-like behaviors after SCI. These findings may provide new opinions and suggestions for promoting the clinical diagnosis and treatment of neuropathic pain-like behaviors after SCI.
