Multicenter StudyValidity of the central sensitization inventory with measures of sensitization in people with knee osteoarthritis.
Our purpose was to determine the validity of the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) with psychophysical tests, psychological and physical factors in patients with Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA). Patients with KOA were recruited from three Montreal hospitals. Psychophysical tests (pressure pain threshold, conditioned pain modulation, temporal summation) were conducted and questionnaires administered to determine the presence of neuropathic pain, somatization, anxiodepressive symptoms, pain catastrophizing (PC), and widespread pain (WSP). ⋯ After adjustment for covariates, a multivariable linear regression determined WSP (unstandardized ß 4.161(0.067, 8.255) p = 0.046), somatization (unstandardized ß 1.828 (1.368, 2.288) p < 0.005), and anxiodepressive symptoms (unstandardized ß 0.419 (0.107, 0.730) p = 0.009) significantly predicted CSI scores. The CSI is more strongly associated with psychological factors than psychophysical test results in a KOA population. Its moderate sensitivity and specificity suggest it should be used as part of a more comprehensive evaluative toolkit.

Extraforaminal lumbar disk herniations are characterized by distinct clinical features in comparison to paramedian lumbar disk herniations. ⋯ Extraforaminal compression is associated with chronic as well as neuropathic pain, presumably caused by direct compression of the dorsal root ganglion, which may preferentially promote specific chronic pain mechanisms. Muscle Nerve 58: 676-680, 2018.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a common consequence of chemotherapeutic treatments in patients with cancer. This study evaluated the validity and reliability of a Chinese version of the Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (C-NPSI) in patients with colorectal cancer and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. ⋯ The C-NPSI has satisfactory reliability and validity. Clinicians and physician can use it to evaluate and manage oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy.

Patients with diabetic polyneuropathy commonly suffer from ongoing burning pain and dynamic mechanical allodynia. In this clinical and skin biopsy study, we aimed at assessing how intraepidermal regenerating nerve sprouts are associated with these two types of pain. ⋯ Our skin biopsy study showing that regenerating sprouts, as assessed with GAP43-staining, were strongly associated with ongoing burning pain, improves our knowledge on the mechanisms underlying neuropathic pain in patients with diabetes.

The Analgesic and Emotional Response to Intravenous Lidocaine Infusion in the Treatment of Postherpetic Neuralgia: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Placebo-controlled Study.
This study evaluated the analgesic efficacy and emotional response to intravenous lidocaine infusion compared with placebo in patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). ⋯ The analgesic response of 5 mg/kg lidocaine intravenous infusion is comparable to placebo in patients with PHN, but intravenous lidocaine infusion significantly reduced total analgesic consumption, and improved the overall emotional and health status.
